Talking Vacation in Milan, Italy...where to stay?

The wife and I are going to Europe on Sept 10th for two weeks. We are leaving Chicago and heading to Milan. We'll be there for 5 days. After that, we're going to Warsaw, Poland. My wife grew up there, so I'm going to meet the family. Plus, we'll be going off on our own.

Neither one of us has been to Milan. Any recommendations on where to stay, what to do?? Or maybe more important--where NOT to stay; and what to stay away from??

Thanks!!

Well, Milan aint the jewel of Italy. The train station is interesting because of its Mussolini roots, swastikas part of the architecture. The Duomo (Catholic marble church, beautiful). The Castello Sforza (I think that is the name), very old. Da Vinci's "Last Supper" is somewhere there and other great masters have roots in town...I guess the models are outta the picture.

Take a train to Venice, or get to Florence if you can. Michaelangelo's David and the Uffizi in Florence are amazing.

Depends on what you go to Milan to see. It's a fashion mecca, so the female contingent there is very high standard. There are nice cathedrals, but all-in-all, it's an industrial city.

Yep, I understand...it's no Rome or Venice. But, we wanted to stop somewhere before our trip to Poland, and with the airfare prices we were able to get for Milan, and then to Poland; it would have been hard to pass up. The original plan was to stop over in Paris, but the airfares recently skyrocketed for Paris. We'll likely just take a trip there next Spring, when prices are better.

I like big cities to visit, and having never been to Europe, Milan was as good as any. We will most likely plan a trip outside of Milan, but we need a good recommendation for hotels in the city.

Anyone??
