"War must be" -Faramir

I was reading "Following Gandalf" last night, and ran across this quote from Faramir, the younger son of the Lord Denethor. Faramir is mourning the loss of his older brother, Boromir, and lamenting the fate of the people of Gondor.

"War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; But I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend...."

I havent played D&D for soooo long.. kinda miss it. I play Neverwinter Nights every so often though.. great gameplay and online community.. uses 3rd ed D&D ruleset.. i have a 20th lvl Weapons Master that deals out close to 200hps per attack.. he's a mean mofo, and hates Rush Limbaugh.

You know, when I dropped that quote in here, I had half hoped for a slightly serious discussion about whether or not war must really be, or thoughts on Tolkein's glorification of war. I was expecting "Faramir's an idiot," or "Absolutely, war is a necessity." Never woulda figured we'd end up throwing completely random and unrelated Star Wars quotes out.

Hmm, just goes to show.

I'm not sure you can say that Tolkein glorified war - or maybe say that without certainty.

Tolkein served in World War I, he wrote about things that disturbed him a great deal and many of his battle scenes and the aftermath were taken directly from what he witnessed in that war.

There was a book my wife was reading that showed his connections and history in regards to WWI and how it affected his writing. To be sure he was a fantasy writer but to be fair he did not glorify war. I think maybe Farmir's comment would be more accurately described as Tolkein's own.

There was a lot of discussion when the Lord of the Rings movies came out about how inappropriate they were in that the glorified war but I don't buy that. I agree with Tolkein, there's no glory in war there is only glory in that which we protect.

It will be a nice day when I don't have to wake up and worry about who is trying to take my freedom and liberty away. The fact remains that liberty and freedom will not defend themselves so...fight we must if it be by the pen or by the sword.
