To be honest, if it is over 5 yrs old, it probably isn't worth repairing. Electronics that get wet usually develop problems that never work themselves out; the same as cars that are "flood specials". If the keyboard was soaked, all kinds of problems. Water leaves impurities (read mineral deposits).

Same thing happened to me...
![]() I took it to a Best Buy repair shop and they laughed at me, literally. I ended up finding a guy in St Louis who fixes laptops . He had a repair service auction on ebay. New motherboard and keyboard for $180. He even upgraded the processor b/c it took him a little longer than expected. I could give you his email address, he might be able to help you out. Not sure he fixes Sonys though. Cheers Philip

What kind of symptoms? Does it not turn on or is a drive damaged etc?

I opened it up, as it was dead. Looks like the water, maybe 10 drops, got thru the keyboard onto the edge of the motherboard, near where the AC comes in. Nothing smoked or burned looking, but is dead. Yes, the AC adapter does put out. No obvious fuses or anything like that. Yes, it was on when it happened.
Thanks for the advice, I did it to myself, I have been meaning to fix that leaking porthole for a year. Was washing the boat, and the laptop was exactly in the wrong place.

Sounds like it's time for an upgrade. A new system board will probably cost you at least half of a new one.

I had to replace it the next day, but am now trying to decide what to do with it. My backup date was a month ago, so I didn't lose too much.

You've got a boat right? They make good anchors after you add some additional weight...maybe that's desktops...hmm.
I use one of my old ones as a doorstop, and another as a teaching aide in a PC 101 class. Other than that, they're not much good when they're that old.

Some PC shops sell a laptop drive to IDE adapter. I would pull the laptop drive and try to move all the data to a desktop, then transfer the data to a new Dell.
I could possibly do that for you next time you are in Dallas.
