Anybody taken an airbag steering wheel off?
I think the bushing in my Avalon sterring column is toast. There seems to be a little movement followed with a knocking noise. It apears to isolated in the column, so I want to take a look, but never removed a wheel with an airbag. How do you take of the "skin" that covers it, and the airbag itself?
TIA! ![]()

Too big to fail

The airbag should pop off, and then you can remove the wheel.
It's actually very common for thieves to steal airbags out of cars; they end up replacing those in salvage-title cars.

Usually, the "skin" and the airbag come off together. Probably held in by a couple of screws from behind the steering wheel. Just make sure you pull the airbag fuse before messing around.

On my Chevy truck, I pull the airbag fuse, pop the two catch levers under the airbag, and unplug the wires under the bag. I would imagine a theif wouldn't bother with the fuse and could have a bag off in about 10 seconds.

Ok, thanks guys! I am a little paranoid so removing the fuse is a good idea.

Make sure you take the fuse out esp before you reconect it. i watched one of these things blow 4 tires 20ft in the air once. |

T o be safe, couldn't you simply remove the negative battery cable prior to working, just in case you accidentlly pulled the "wrong fuse"?

MoneyGuy1 is on the money.
Remove the ground (negative) cable from the battery and wait about 3 minutes for any SRS capacitors to bleed off, then remove the steering wheel. If you don't remove power from the system, the air bag might deploy ... somehow. Sherwood |

Rule to remember:
"Even if it is only remotely possible that something bad will happen, odds are it will" Another rule (created by my wife) concerning Porsche cars and repairs: "If you can see it, you can't reach it. If you can reach it, you can't see it". (after watching me for years)
