The 911 Is An Industrial Design Triumph..post pics of others

German's are generally not known for producing things of beauty......that feat is usually left to the Italians......however the curves of the 911 are truly some of the most gorgeous created......they are sculpture.......

I thought it would be fun for Pelicans to post Industrial designs, not limited to cars, that achieved similar lofty heights.......

I'll kick it of with my first choice......

The Eames Lounge Chair, designed in 1956 by Ray and Charles Eames for their good friend, film director, Billy Wilder, so that he could watch his beloved movies in comfort......Charles Eames' goal was to design an all-American chair that was inspired by the look and feel of a well-worn Baseball Mitt........(i love the baseball mitt angle)

My 2nd choice.......If you've ever handled or used it....you'll know what I'm talking about....

IPod is soooo Kubrick "2001"......I named mine HAL

Ipod is changing the way we purchase and listen to music....It is literally reshaping the recording industry........Therfore it is a milestone of industrial design......no small feat

over 90 years old and still keeping fans in awe today. Say "Boston" to a Japanese business man, and chances are the answer you will get is, "ah, Fenway Park!"

Maybe not such a great place to be over the past couple weeks, though.............

The marriage of satellite TV and Tivo. Elegant, simple and powerful.

Gotta admit, this design has had one hell of a run. I own a '46.

Crown Graphic press camera, and the height of American professional cameras. Originally designed for use by members of the Press for capturing rapidly occurring events, these cameras are still in use today by many enthusiasts (including me!). Any device manufactured in '57 that still sees use today (and makes good prints, none less!) is an industrial design accomplishment, in my book.

I'll go back a few years to the early 1800's when the weight driven Banjo clock was first developed and patented in 1802 by Simon Willard.
It's an all American design that gave people a less expensive choice to the floor standing tall clocks of the day. They sold for around 45 dollars at first until later competition brought the price down. A clock you could just hang on the wall, what a novel idea.
These were first built in small shops/sheds in the Boston area with a young apprentice as a helper. You had to be a master of a file back then to cut the teeth in it's brass movement.
These clocks continue to run today with simple maintenance.
In later years mass production was developed in this industry.

This is a pic of a reproduction S. Willard banjo timepiece made by Elmer Stennes circa 1970.

The 1934 Burlington Zephyr...

...its design influenced refridgerators, irons, toasters, ice chests, cars, tools, etc. well into the 1960's...
