California registration options

Hi all:

I am moving to California in the next month or so. I have owned my 76 912E for years here in PA.

It has carbs but my understanding is that a 1976 car will not pass the California emissions laws unless stock and functional emissions devices are intact.

So, is there an "antique" registration available?

In the alternative, is it feasible to re-title my car in my brother's name here in PA.? In reality, he and I have have both invested and worked on the car and driven it together so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch.

When will '76 be exempt?

My car had thermal reactors but not cats.

Thanks,

David

david, you have until january of next year. then you are smogged exempt. that is, unless this assembly bill in the works passes, then you are effed until infinity.

dont know about historic registration.

Is that January of 2005 or 2006? Jan 2005 I could live with no problem.

Thanks Vash! What's the likelihood on the bill passing? If I title the car in my brother's name, wouldn't it be irrelevant since it would have valid PA plates and not owned by me?

dave, i am thinking along the same lines. i dont know what liability issues the bro's would be taking on tho.

if the bill dies, you will be good in jan of 05. my 75 was exempted this past jan. so cross your fingers and i hope you are a free man in 6 months.

Thanks Vash. Maybe I'll leave the car here in PA until January and then drive it out after the holidays?
