stainless steel and teak wood.

damn it if i didnt find a big pile of stainless steel and teak benches. me and some friends are going to buy the entire pile. we calculate about 12000lbs, of stainless, and at 35 cents a pound we should break even with the buy in cost. i hope to mess around with the wood to make a few things. bed frame, stuff like that. what do you think my odds of craiglisting the rest of the wood will be? i checked a local hardwood dealer and he is getting around $17 per foot (2x4). we will have about 5000 feet when done. maybe this will be too big a PITA to mess with?

I may be able to take most of, if not all of the teak off your hands. Its currently in the form of benches?

I'm not going to pay anywhere near $17 a board foot for what amounts to salvaged lumber.

no, pics yet. but after thursday, we will have separated it from the stainless. we will have, it separated into 2x4's. the teak is red. minor scraping with a pocketknife will reveal smokin hot wood underneath. only thing, 4 SS allthread holes evenly spaced, and some minor holes from lagbolts. pics then. one of my buddies is keeping the wood. the other three will keep a bit for hobby stuff and sell the rest. we dont even expect 17perfoot. stay posted for pictures.

Why not sell the benches? Shoot, I'd take a couple in a heartbeat.

the benches weigh about 400 lbs. they are way 70's looking. and need to be poured into a foundation.

i will never do that again two 12 hour days slaving away, taking them apart. not to mention, me and my good friend had way more common sense than the rest of the demo crew.

looks like my buddy talked me into selling approx 300 2x4's of teak. they range from 10' to 13' long. there are some holes where they were attached to the benches. we will keep some. i hope to build a bed with my share. maybe some patio furniture. i just have to hurdle the carpentry skill dept. oh, and the tools.....

ok.. good for you. Teak can be tricky to seal & finish. I know a little bit about it from working in boat yards. If you ever want a boat grade teak finish I'll be around to offer suggestions on high end results.

you want to do nice furniture, right? You haven't even cut your lumber, right? I think you should come up with a rough idea on your ideas? Then send me a big bit pic of a whole piece, seperate pic of flawed areas you have to use, and another pic of nice grained areas. I would think it would be S American teak vs Indonesian area. There are African and C American woods that are somewhat similar to teak. In other words, the only limit to the possibilities is the amount of time you have to invest and the correct wood will be worth a fortune with your custom work. You should get a pro to confirm or something before the big time time investment. Detail carving is difficult because of the wide grain structure vs walnut's tight grain.. no problem for the home mechanic, but big bucks to have a pro do it IF he knows how and isn't afraid of it.

About the holes.. I assume now your concern is for a wham bam? Get the plugs, let it all stabilize for at least week out of direct sun, sand, teak oil stripper, thin thin coat of varnish, fine sand the fuzzies that become raised, finish with a medium coat, then a quick sand every year or two if outside furniture. Z-Spar varnish has a nice quality hue vs very clear. Urethane coatings look a little low clas if your comparing the two side by side.

Your bed furniture involves a bit more time and steps.

Here's a pic of some teak. The fitting was tiedous and the bow tie gun checkering was about 40hrs for each door.
