I would submit that we aren't really even trying capital punishment. There are approximately 20,000 homicides in the US every year. We execute less than 300/year - less than 1%. For us to really see if executions work, we need to be up around 50%. No one is advocating that though.

I know in Singapore, you get the death penalty for drug convictions and they don't have much of a drug problem.

There's a trade off between being safe and being cruel and unusual.

No one wants to live in a country that goes Medieval on jaywalkers, but we don't want to let killers walk either (OJ).88

Let's ramp up capital punishment, reduce the time spent on appeals, etc. The only caveat is that if a person put to death is subsequently found to be innocent, then the jury and judge who heard the case are then put to death.

Seriously, WTF are you going to do with people like this? Let them sit in a room with cable TV and be a burden on the taxpayer for the next 50 years? Don't be ridiculous. Maybe at one time incarceration was about rehabilitation but now it's about learning to love the man/boy love lifestyle and picking up new ways to commit crimes.

There's no "retribution" in capital punshiment. You are eliminating a source of unsolvable problems. By making it a public hanging you are pointedly demonstrating the repercussions of your actions.

Uh, Bluesky........, don't assume that you know my views on crime and punishment. I never argue w/ the term "liberal", (here or elsewhere), because I do not consider it derogatory. :) But I'm not much of a good liberal, really. Much too unpredictable on the issues. ;)

What did George Carlin say about the "death penalty"?

"There is really no such thing as a 'death penalty', since we are all going to die anyways. It's really more like an 'early death penalty'........, eliminating those last miserable years sitting in a cell and getting ass-raped by bubba, but leaving the other years of killing and stealing untouched....."

I'm all for the Arizona chain gang, hell let's put anyone who steals more than $10 million on one! "Kenny-boy" Lane, that Tyco POS, Neil Bush, cripes, those freeways are going to be spotless!! :D

Hmm, I like that idea. I would normally be all for the death penalty for certain crimes but the fact that our system often railroads innocent people for crimes they didn't commit leads to to prefer the cautious route of life sentences without the chance of parole.

You can always release the falsely accused but you can't bring them back to life.
