W & Quayle
It's been said that George Herbert Walker Bush chose Dan Quayle as his running mate because Dan reminded George Senior of George Junior. How similar are they? Here's your chance to find out. Below are quotes from both Danny and
Dubya. See if you can tell who said what. 1. "For every fatal shooting, there were roughly three nonfatal shootings. And, folks, this is unacceptable in America. It's just unacceptable. And we're going to do something about it." 2. "The Holocaust was an obscene period in our nation's history. I mean in this century's history. But we all lived in this century. I didn't live in this century." 3. "It's very important for folks to understand that when there's more trade, there's more commerce." 4. "I believe we are on an irreversible trend toward more freedom and democracy -- but that could change." 5. "In my sentences, I go where no man has gone before." 6. "What a terrible thing to have lost one's mind. Or not to have a mind at all. How true that is." 7. "One of the common denominators I have found is that expectations rise above that which is expected." 8. "Republicans understand the importance of bondage between a mother and child." 9. "You teach a child to read, and he or her will be able to pass a literacy test." 10. "Verbosity leads to unclear, inarticulate things." 11. "A low voter turnout is an indication of fewer people going to the polls." 12. "If we do not succeed, then we run the risk of failure." 13. "I think it's fine, as long as it's Christian prayers. Anything else is un-American." 14. "We should develop anti-satellite weapons because we could not have prevailed without them in 'Red Storm Rising'." 15. "There's an old saying that says, fool me once, shame on ... shame on you. Fool me ... you can't get fooled again." 16. "Japan is an important ally of ours. Japan and the United States of the Western industrialized capacity, 60 percent of the GNP, two countries. That's a statement in and of itself." 17. "I'm hopeful. I know there is a lot of ambition in Washington, obviously. But I hope the ambitious realize that they are more likely to succeed with success as opposed to failure." 18. "Look, I've done it their way this far and now it's my turn. I'm my own handler. Any questions? Ask me ... There's not going to be any more handler stories because I'm the handler ... I'm Doctor Spin." 19. "The California crunch really is the result of not enough power-generating plants and then not enough power to power the power of generating plants." 20. "I have made good judgments in the past. I have made good judgments in the future." 21. "I would have to ask the questioner. I haven't had a chance to ask the questioners the question they've been questioning." 22. "We're going to have the best-educated American people in the world." 23. "Natural gas is hemispheric. I like to call it hemispheric in nature because it is a product that we can find in our neighborhoods." 24. "Don't forget about the importance of the family. It begins with the family. We're not going to redefine the family. Everybody knows the definition of the family." [Meaningful pause.] "A child." [Meaningful pause.] "A mother." [Meaningful pause.] "A father. There are other arrangements of the family, but that is a family and family values." 25. "Families is where our nation finds hope, where wings take dream." 26. "I've been very blessed with wonderful parents and a wonderful family, and I am proud of my family. Anybody turns to their family. I have a very good family. I'm very fortunate to have a very good family. I believe very strongly in the family. It's one of the things we have in our platform, is to talk about it." 27. "They misunderestimated me." 28. "I stand by all the misstatements that I've made." 29. "They want the federal government controlling social security like it's some kind of federal program." 30. "It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it." 31. "Unfairly but truthfully, our party has been tagged as being against things ... anti-immigrant, for example. And we're not a party of anti-immigrants. Quite the opposite. We're a party that welcomes people." 32. "We have a firm commitment to NATO, we are a part of NATO. We have a firm commitment to Europe. We are a part of Europe." 33. "I'm gonna talk about the ideal world, Chris. I've read -- I understand reality. If you're asking me as the president, would I understand reality, I do." 34. "I love California, I practically grew up in Phoenix." 35. "When I'm talking about ... when I'm talking about myself, and when he's talking about myself, all of us are talking about me." 36. "My friends, no matter how rough the road may be, we can and we will, never, never surrender to what is right." 37. "It's clearly a budget. It's got a lot of numbers in it." 38. "We are leaders of the world of the space program. We have been the leaders of the world of our ... of the space program and we're not going to continue where we're going to go, not withstanding the Soviet Union's demise and collapse -- the former Soviet Union -- we now have independent republics which used to be called the Soviet Union. Space is the next frontier to be explored. And we're going to explore. Think of all the things we rely upon in space today: communications from ... Japan, detection of potential ballistic missile attacks. Ballistic missiles are still here. Other nations do have ballistic missiles. How do you think we were able to detect some of the Scud missiles and things like that? Space, reconnaissance, weather, communications -- you name it. We use space a lot today." 39. "People make suggestions on what to say all the time. I'll give you an example; I don't read what's handed to me. People say, 'here, here's your speech, or here's an idea for a speech.' They're changed. Trust me." 40. "I deserve respect for the things I did not do." 41. "I do know I'm ready for the job. And, if not, that's just the way it goes." 42. "For NASA, space is still a high priority." 43. "Rarely is the question asked: is our children learning?" 44. "I suppose three important things certainly come to my mind that we want to say thank you. The first would be our family. Your family, my family -- which is composed of an immediate family of a wife and three children, a larger family with grandparents and aunts and uncles. We all have our family, whichever that may be ... The very beginnings of civilization, the very beginnings of this country, goes back to the family. And time and time again, I'm often reminded, especially in this Presidential campaign, of the importance of a family, and what a family means to this country. And so when you say thanks, I suppose the first thing that would come to mind would be to thank the Lord for the family." 45. "We ought to make the pie higher." -------------------- Answers: Odd-numbered quotes are from Dubya, even-numbered quotes are from Danny. |

That fat hillbilly can also turn a phrase:
"I can spend your money better than you can." "[I]t depends on how you define "alone" ... there were a lot of times when we were alone, but I never really thought we were." "It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is" - excerpts from Bill Clinton's grand jury testimony "The road to tyranny, we must remember, begins with the destruction of the truth." from a speech at the University of Connecticut, Oct 15, 1997. "The other thing we have to do is to take seriously the role in this problem of...older men who prey on underage women...There are consequences to decisions and...one way or the other, people always wind up being held accountable." Bill Clinton, June 13, 1996, in a speech endorsing a national effort against teen pregnancy. "[There is] no question that an admission of making false statements to government officials and interfering with the FBI and the CIA is an impeachable offense." "Just try to imagine what it would be like to be 300 million years old." "No one wants to get this (Lewinsky) matter behind us more than I do, except maybe all the rest of the American people," "You know the one thing that's wrong with this country? Everyone gets a chance to have their fair say." The president was giving a speech in Berlin in May, 1998, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Airlift, which kept the city afloat in 1948-49 when Stalin attempted to starve it into submission. Clinton chose to give special recognition to then-Lt. Gail Halvorsen of Provo, Utah, who had dropped packages of candy for Berlin's children from his aircraft as he landed with supplies at Templehoff Airport. "She is here with us today," the president declared, speaking of Halvorsen. "I'd like to ask her to stand." Gail Halvorsen then stood up - Mr. Gail Halvorsen, a 77-year old grandfather. "Thank you, Sir, " said Clinton. President Clinton was interviewed on January 21, 1998 by Jim Lehrer on his alleged affair with a Whitehouse intern and subsequent alleged subornation of her perjury. Clinton said, "I'm just trying to suppress my natural impulses and get back to work." "There are a lot of very brilliant people who believe that the nation-state is fast becoming a relic of the past," - President Clinton, New York Times, November 25, 1997 In January 1994 Clinton made a trip to Europe. At that time there was some friction between the European leaders and the U.S. about troop deployments in Bosnia. While in Belgium, the European leaders and Clinton had a cocktail party. It was covered by CNN. On their 3:00PM (CST) broadcast, CNN with Frank Cezno showed a clip of the party. It showed Clinton talking to Helmut Kohl and saying, "I was thinking of you last night, Helmut, because I watched the sumo wrestling on television." Bill Clinton, January 27, 1992, speaking about the allegations that he had a 12 year affair with Gennifer Flowers..."They've been exposed as the trash they are" Arkansas Gazette "When I was a younger man and had a life," stated Clinton, "I owned an El Camino pickup in the '70s. It was a real sort of Southern deal. I had Astroturf in the back. You don't want to know why, but I did." "And the deficit has come down for four years in a row for the first time since before the Civl War. I meant to say since before World War II. But maybe it should be since before the Civil War." In his speech to the Fraternal Order of Police in Cincinnati, OH during the 1996 election, President Clinton bragged on the strong Ohio economy. However, he forgot to tell the audience that at the time Ohio had a Republican Governor, top five State officials were all Republicans, both the State House and Senate were controlled by Republicans, a Republican US Senator and 13 of 19 US Representatives were Republicans. "Thanks for the poncho." President Clinton said this when he was presented with the Romanian tri-color flag during his visit in July. The flag did have a head-sized hole in the middle... But flags with the centers ripped out are the norm in Romania these days. With holes where the hated communist emblem used to be, such flags symbolize the 1989 anti-Communist revolt that led to the establishment of democracy. Shouldn't our President KNOW this?? Associated Press 8/27/97 "The last time I checked, the Constitution said, 'of the people, by the people and for the people.' That's what the Declaration of Independence says." that phrase was in the Gettysburg Address!! "Almost makes you want to go to jail out here." "I am the only President in who knew something about agriculture when I got there." (Bill Clinton, Washington Post, 4/26/95) "I'm sure I spent more time in Texas than anybody else who had run for President recently." (Bill Clinton in Longview, Texas, U.S. Newswire, 9/27/96) From Time magazine. 6/17/96 p. 104 refers to "Juanita" a recently discovered Inca mummy "You know, if I were a single man, I might ask that mummy out. That's a good-looking mummy!"---Bill Clinton "We can't be so fixated on our desire to preserve the rights of ordinary Americans to legitimately own handguns and rifles" "It has not worked. No one can say it has worked, so I decided we're either going to do what we said we're going to do with the U.N., or we're going to do something else." "African-Americans watch the same news at night that ordinary Americans do." President Clinton learned there were 100,000 cattle guards in Colorado. Since Clinton was so upset with ranchers' protests over his grazing policies, he told U.S. Secretary of Interior Bruce Babbitt to fire half the cattle guards immediately. Before Babbitt could proceed with the President's wishes, Colorado representative Pat Schroeder intervened with a request that before any were fired, they would be given six months of retraining. Clinton obviously did not know that a cattle guard is a bunch of parallel pipes that cattle will not cross because they can't walk on pipes. "the purpose of government is to rein in the rights of the people" during an interview on MTV in 1993
