Pretty good David, although I'm not sure about the al-Qaida part. Unless you're talking about a particular member who is now crippled. *That* I could believe

Found on the internet -
1. crippled , halt, halting, lame, game -- (disabled in the feet or legs; "a crippled soldier"; "a game leg") So if you meant "crippled al-Qaida" as destroyed, elminated, 100% neutralized then yes that would be a false statement. I believe al-Qaida is crippled in the sense of a greatly diminished capability. Oh and they are pretty lame too. -edit, now if only I could spell eliminated. |

LOL!
the world's #1 superpower goes to war with one of the poorest nations in the world and some are bragging about how long it took to "take" Iraq. If i have a fight with an ant, i can step on it and kill it in about a second. i'm so good at what i do! haha.

Just off the top of my head..The day after Pearl Harbor, Hitler declared war on the United States. Prior to that, ships from the U.S. headed for England with supplies were being torpedoed and a state of war didn't exist. Roosevelt did not want to get involved in Europe.
Your knowledge re: WW II is lacking. There were even U boats operating in th Gulf of Mexico, sinking passenger and cargo ships. It would be rather easy for a historian to change most of that list into drivel with facts. Simplifying international events into sound bytes minimizes the problems of the time. Armchair experts, given the advantage of coming after the events can always find fault with the decisions. I seriously doubt if you, put in the position of the leaders you have mentioned could have done any better. You will have to do far better to justify the "quagmire" we are getting ourselves into.

I hate to "hijack" a thread, and I mean no offense but I must interject here. Early in 1941 FDR extended the navy's neutrality zone from 300 miles off shore to mid-Atlantic and put US troops on Greenland and Iceland. By July, naval "patrols" were extended to Iceland to protect American ships and Brirsh ships were allowed in the convoys. None of this was done with congerssional authorization. Hitler ordered his U-boats to "avoid incidents with U.S. ships". When the Greer was fired on FDR said "I tell you the blunt fact that the German submarine fired first upon this American destroyer without warning". He said the Greer had been on a "mail run". FDR then called German u-boats "the rattlesnakes of the Atlantic" and ordered US warships to shoot them on sight "when you see a ratlesnake poised to strike, you do not wait until he has struck before you crush him". This also was done without congressional authorization. A senate investigation found that the Greer was not in fact a "mail ship", but had been trailing the u-boat for 3 1/2 hours radioing it's position to british forces attacking it with depth charges. An attack the Greer joined. The U-boat fired in self defense. Churchill told his cabinet "the president has said that he would become more and more provocative. If the Germans did not like it, they could attack American forces. Everything was to be done to force an incident" When the Kearny was torpedoed on Oct. 17, FDR stated "America has been attacked by Germany", neglecting to add that the Kearny was dropping depth charges on the U-boat before being "attacked". FDR wanted war with Germany even though the American people did not. BTW which passenger ships were sunk in the Gulf of Mexico prior to the declaration of war? Pete |
