I live about 60 miles northeast of Richmond. That city used to be about big tobacco and heavy industry. It is somewhat in transition now. Kings Dominion is north by 10-15 miles in a rural area.
Just get into the city's website and look into the nightlife and local attractions. There is a LOT of history if you are a civil war buff.

I used to go there a lot. My daugter now lives there and made these eating recommendations:
In Shockoe Slip - Tabacco Company, Sam Miller's, The Hard Shell (awesome seafood!) In the Fan district- Helen's (since 1937), Stella's, or Davis & Main West End side of town- Cheesecake Factory, Pasta Luna Hope this helps.

If you're into history, take a side trip to Charlottesville and see Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson. It is in a beautiful setting on the top of a mountain and the tours are quite interesting
