Any BMW Motorcycle owners out there?

I am considering buying a BMW motorcycle, a R1150RT, for weekend fun and commute 1-2 days a week…maybe a long weekend trip no and then once the wife gets comfortable with riding a bike. I have two motorcycles in the past, both Yamahas 650 and 750 (Seca). Does anyone have any advice on these models…good/bad. How is the maintenance, expensive? TIA.

I have a 2004 BMW R1150GS, not nearly as much of a sport tourer like the RT, but they do share the same motor, I belive. I have over 4,000 miles on mine and have had no problems. As far as maint. is concerned, there is a 600 mile tune up that was about $300. I also commute a couple of days a week 52 miles each way, so I am a bit biased. I say go for it. Bill |

ad owns a 72 R75/5 and an 85 K100RS. None has ever required any service. Just tune ups and on the old one, replacement for rusted out silencers.

Great bikes, not the fastest but like BMWMOA says "hard to be humble when you ride the best". I personally ride a 2004 Harley VRod.

I have an 04 GS1150. BMWs are great bikes for what they do. They have a personality, just like our cars and set themselves apart from the Japanese masses. Service intervals are every 6,000 miles which is very excessive if you pile on the miles. Your bike will be in the shop often. Its the only down-side I can think of. Engines vibrate through handlebars and cause hand fatigue if the throttle bodies are not synced properly. A good dealer can take care of it. Good luck.

Thanks for all the info guys...I did not realize there was a forum (thanks Rufblackbird!). I will continue to research it but with the p-car running great (knock on wood) and no desire/need to make any major mods at this time…I am thinking I will have a bike in the VERY near future
