On Sunday, August 15, a 16-year-old girl in the town of Neka, northern Iran, was executed. Ateqeh Sahaleh was hanged in public on Simetry Street off Rah Ahan Street at the city center.

The sentence was issued by the head of Neka’s Justice Department and subsequently upheld by the mullahs’ Supreme Court and carried out with the approval of Judiciary Chief Mahmoud Shahroudi.

In her summary trial, the teenage victim did not have any lawyer and efforts by her family to recruit a lawyer was to no avail. Ateqeh personally defended herself. She told the religious judge, Haji Rezaii, that he should punish the main perpetrators of moral corruption not the victims.

The judge personally pursued Ateqeh’s death sentence, beyond all normal procedures and finally gained the approval of the Supreme Court. After her execution Rezai said her punishment was not execution but he had her executed for her “sharp tongue”.

My totally uneducated guess would be rape; this sort of thing isn't uncommon in Muslim-dominated societies. Another report I was reading noted that in Muslim societies worldwide, a rape occurs approximately every 3 minutes. In most cases, it is considered the fault of the woman, because she must have been exposing too much flesh, being generally provocative, and shouldn't have been out alone anyway. Looking forward to when America is over-run by Islam.

A civilization still living in the 12th century.

Here's what Churchill had to say about Islam.

"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property - either as a child, a wife, or a concubine - must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.
"Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen: all know how to die. But the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science - the science against which it had vainly struggled - the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome."

That is Harsh!

Islam wont work here - too many independent thinkers and women who would rather die than become the property of a man.

I did a bunch of searches on Google, and it all seems to go back to a single article in "Iran Focus". I don't know anything about this group, but there is nothing in "Snopes" that says this is an Urban Legend either.

I did find one exception, and it had a little more detail to the story. Still news out of this part of the world is sketchy at best, and perhaps always will be.

The additional article is posted below;

A 16 year girl hanged in public for having the courage to defend herself in court

Boston, MA - The Women's Forum Against Fundamentalism in Iran (WFAFI) has just been informed that a 16 year old girl, Atefeh Sahaleh Rajabi, was hanged in public on August 15, 2004. Atefeh as hanged in her home town of Neka in northern state of Mazandaran, Iran. She was charged for having an unlawful relationship with a young man.

Despite her family's efforts to obtain a lawyer, Atefeh was denied one by the order of clerical judge. In her own defense, she told the judge, Haji Rezai, that he should punish the main perpetrators for moral corruptions and not the victims. Atefeh was condemned to death by both local clerical judge and Iran's Supreme Court in Tehran. The young man involved in the act only received 100 lashes and walked away free.

After her execution, the local clerical judge said her punishment was not execution but he had her executed for her "sharp tongue". Atefeh was given a more severe punishment because of her gender and courage to talk back to the fundamentalist rulers in Iran's court system. The charges against her were unfounded and the court had no proof of the young couple's relationship.

WFAFI condemns this misogynous act by Iran's fundamentalist rulers and the clerical judges. Even though Atefeh was denied a lawyer for her defense and thus had no fair trial, she was punished for defending herself so courageously.

WFAFI holds the leaders of Iran's fundamentalist regime responsible for Atefeh's murder. Those who commit such crimes against women should be brought in to justice. Violence against women in Iran is institutionalized and Atefeh's case should not be forgotten. We call upon all women's rights activists and human rights advocates to support the Iranian women in their struggle to end such atrocities in Iran.

Damn Craig, that was one hell of a quote. But Winston did know how to get a point across. One thing that has always struck me as funny is that of a guy is willing to strap 40#s of dynamite to his son or daughter to kill people neither one of them know, how do you reason with that guy? Across the barell of a gun?

Money, that's 7th century.

Check this link it give the why's & wherefores of martyrdom (martyrdom 101).

Mule..That's when it started. The 12th is when the enlightened age of the ME ended. Up to then, they were a center of learning and of science.

Money, the peace lovers believe that the pinacle of the development of mankind was 7th century arabia when big mo was striding the sands. That's why there is virtually no development.

There is a wonderful novel by Margaret Atwood called The Handmaid's Tale. Atwood wrote it in response to the 1984 coup in Iran. It's about a muslim-esque theocracy in America. Extremely chilling but very very good.
