Terminator's speech was BS......

Big surprise here.

Turns out that Arnold was FOS as well in his rousing RNC speech, with all of the talk about "Soviet tanks" in Austria and "fleeing socialism".....

I was scratching my head a little when he delivered it, but have to admit that I'm not real up on Austrian history post WW2, so I just took his word for it. Turns out that is a mistake when it comes to political speeches these days:

Maybe you should save that one . . . .for when Ahnold runs for Prez. ;)

Or are you just trying to distract from Kerrys lies?

Czechoslovkia border Austria and in 1968 the Russians invaded Czechoslovkia...Austria also boarders Hungary in 1956 the Russians invaded Hungary. Maybe that where he gets the Russian tanks from...

jm951 09-03-2004 12:22 PM

Unless the Warsaw Pact stopped shopping at Comrades R Us, it'd be a sure thing they have Soviet built tanks.

widebody911 09-03-2004 12:22 PM

Maybe this is what he saw.

I am no historian, but my encyclopedia states the following:

" By the 1960s Austria had joined the European Free Trade Association in 1959, but association with the European Economic Community (Common Market) was held back by Soviet opposition. Politically, a nearly equal balance of power between the conservative People's party and the Socialist party resulted in successive coalition cabinets until 1966, when the People's party won a clear majority. They were ousted by the Socialists in the 1970 elections."

This appears to me that there was a split in power between the Conservatives and the Socialists, so an individual who was growing up during those confusing times may have a different recollection than a historian some forty years later. There appears to have been a strong Socialist presence during that time, and eventually took over in 1970. I think Arnold's recollection, being his own, is accurate according to what he experienced. History is funny, one person's recollection is not incorrect just because it differs from another's. If Arnold felt oppressed and came to our fine country to seek freedom, then I believe that is exactly what happened.

Me, too. Did you also notice he didn't talk about his Nazi daddy - well, at least as a Nazi?

LOL! That's a stretch!

He said as a boy he fled, Ted. If he was a boy in '68, he'd be at the most, early forties now. Unless Arnold's one of those arrested-development children.

From his speech:
Quote:

When I was a boy, the Soviets occupied part of Austria. I saw their tanks in the streets. I saw communism with my own eyes. I remember the fear we had when we had to cross into the Soviet sector. Growing up, we were told, "Don't look the soldiers in the eye. Look straight ahead." It was a common belief that Soviet soldiers could take a man out of his own car and ship him off to the Soviet Union as slave labor.

My family didn't have a car — but one day we were in my uncle's car. It was near dark as we came to a Soviet checkpoint. I was a little boy, I wasn't an action hero back then, and I remember how scared I was that the soldiers would pull my father or my uncle out of the car and I'd never see him again. My family and so many others lived in fear of the Soviet boot. Today, the world no longer fears the Soviet Union and it is because of the United States of America!
It is entirely possible that in the small country of Austria he saw the tanks.

I heard that some austrians were complaining that he used the word 'communism' instead of socialism. Well, here we pretty much equate the two, so it's all a rediculous attempt to discredit his speech.

IT's amazing to me that lefties are so quick to jump on some nuance, but will let John Kerry take a complete pass on NOT EVEN BEING IN CAMBODIA which was SEARED, SEARED IN HIS MEMORY. honestly, now. get it together.

No, it's probably more like the kids that he scares w/ his Hummers who will later in life re-invent it so that they were oppressed in Pacific Palisades. :D

My Gawd this is begiining to resemble a European Soccer Match...

It wasn't BS. I think the terminator just got his timelines mixed up. If you went back in time to kill John Connor as many times as he did. Then one time your evil the next time your good, his CPU was pulled out in T2.

I think he is reffering to T4 where he goes back into to hunt down Sarah Connors grandpa in Austria. We just haven't seen the movie yet.

But I think in T4 it ends with him wiping out the Conor family tree. Then they send a robot back in time to become governor of Caleeforian to make sure Cyber Dyne Systems is no longer messed with. The robot goes to the RNC to help the new undercover robot T-542 (Bush) to get elected so the nuking of humans is set back on course.

Red, you better get your ass down to the Writer's Guild and register that, before it's stolen out from under you. SmileWavy

Geez, everybody knows that he bacame a good guy after T1, and he was protecting the Connor's, not hunting them down.

Oh, and by pulling out his CPU, he was ridding himself of being a mindless Democrat robot and becoming a self-aware Republican individual with a conscience. ;)

Hence, a tool.

Maybe you are right: According to Dictionary.com

tool ( P ) Pronunciation Key (tl) n.
Something used in the performance of an operation; an instrument: “Modern democracies have the fiscal and monetary tools... to end chronic slumps and galloping inflations” (Paul A. Samuelson).

Unlike Kerry being a tool:

A person used to carry out the designs of another; a dupe. :p

Kerry? A tool? I've thought of Kerry as nothing but a tool as well.

The problem I have is both parties are making tools of us.

Do Europeans refer to it as a soccer or football match?

can Arnold ever give a speech without quoting a line from one of his movies or SNL sketches?
