Before he enrolled in a literacy class at the North Valley Occupational Center, Adolio Gonzales, 29, was intimidated by filling out job applications or even going to an amusement park.

A similar article in the LA Times today states that most of them who are illiterate in our language are also illiterate in their native language as well.

This was one of the original justifications of bi-lingual education. That it would be easier to teach kids to read and right in their native language, and then mainstream them into English. Didn't work. Still doesn't.

Conversely, I've had to learn Spanish to get around parts of L.A.
