Help Me Clean Up My Vice!!!
Nope...this isn't about what you were probably thinking...
I've got a brand new vice I want to install on my workbench, but the thing came covered in grease. It's so saturated that I hate to touch it...even with dirty hands. I know it's there as a preservative, to keep it from rusting. And here in Georgia, that's probably a good thing. Can anyone recommend a cleaner I could use to get rid of a bunch of this stuff? I'd much rather keep a slight coat of oil on the thing than to have it covered like it is with grease. I've got some Greased Lightning, Shop and Auto Degreaser, I supposed I could use that, but was wanting to hear some other ideas before I cleaned it. Anyone...? Randy

Take it to the coin-op car wash.

Think cosmoline removal here, marine.
Mineral spirits, Simple Green, or GI bore cleaner. Soak, and brush clean with a nylon-bristle brush. Rinse, let dry, apply rust-protective lubricant to moving parts. Hope that helps. Jason

Diesel fuel and a tooth brush, carb cleaner for final spray off.

Thanks for all the answers, guys.
Well, I took the Greased Lightning to it with a plastic toothbrush and scrubbed throuh all the grease. It worked like a charm. It actually cut through the "clean" grease easier than it does my grimey car parts. Put a light coat of some machine oil on the bare surfaces to prevent rust. Looks like it should do the trick. Jason, if I were still in the Corps, I would have used some PD-680 (Dry Cleaning Solvent) on it, but unfortunately, I don't have the same access to that stuff anymore. It worked wonders on preserved aircraft parts. Randy

qikcpa, I wish I would have waited for your post. That sure was nice of you to offer up your wife's dishwasher! You sure she won't get upset???? You're local so I'm sure I could have had it finished tonight.
Randy

I'm trying to clean up my vice...haven't had any bourbon for a couple of weeks. My Vise, on the other hand, doesn't need cleaning...
