Opinions on Land Rover Freelander?
The wife wants a SUV. We have no off-road needs, so a "soft-roader" will be OK. Where I live, the choices are somewhat limited for the money I want to spend. I'm leaning towards Jeep Cherokee (not the Grand Cherokee, the small one with round headlights, in the US it is called something else) or LR Freelander. Not many other choices around here, and I will have Jap crap over my dead body.
Anybody care to comment on the Freelander? TD4 vs V6? Does it have the same problems as the Disco's? What typical maintenance problems to look out for? LeRoux

TD4 is the only reliable one. The others suffer from the usual Rover K series low coolant capacity problems leading to many head gasket failures.
Read what Honest John has to say about the Freelander: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/index.htm Shame you rule out jap crap as they make the best soft roaders. The Nissan X-Trail is very popular in the UK (made here too I think) and the diesel will still do 40mpg. Don't know if its available in SA though. |

I drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee and agree with Phil, don't rule out the Jap Crap, all of them are of a better quality than the Land Rover.
