Arizona Pelicans
Going to the NASCAR weekend at the beginning of November at PIR. Now, some would say I'm just going to hang out with my inbred bubba relatives, but "Stupid"men often say stupid things, so we'll leave his opinion to himself.
My question is, since were taking a little extra time off, what should we go see in Arizona or even the surrounding states? All the books and brochures talk about Sedona, but I'm not a fancier of art, and all the little artsy fartsy stores are not my idea of vacation. Also keep in mind we'll be in a motorhome and with a dog, so driving up some one lane mountain road to see a bubbling brook would probably not be advised. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. Brian

Sedona
I have been all over the world and you will not find a more beautiful place than Sedona. You can drive a motor home, find a convenient pull off and hike with your dog on some of the most beautiful trails in the west and not be more than 1/2 mile off the main road thru town.Don`t miss it ! Sedona has some nice parks, one of them even allows dogs. You can wander around Oak Creek and hike a bit or just sit half in the sun and half in the water.
Some say the Grand Canyon is just a big hole in the ground, but I find it awe-inspiring. Jerome is a mining-town-turned-art-community that is pretty interesting to walk around in. At least my wife liked it. The Sonoran Desert Museum near Tucson is not to be missed. Lovely walks to be had there. Out here, though, no matter what you do you're going to have to deal with twisty mountain roads. Just be careful. Buses do it...

What kind of things do you like to do? Arizona has it all (no ocean, but then SD,OC and rocky point are close). You wont be too far from a Top Notch mexican restaraunt- "Los Dos Molinos" on 7th and baseline (roughly). Secret- The resaraunt is the Hollywood cowboy star "Tom Mix" home converted to a restaurant. They will admit that, but fail to tell you it was also owned for a time by Btimer's Mortuary as overflow storage. Nonetheless, it is one of the top 10 all time SOnoran restaurants in the SW. Ditto on Tucsons Desert Sonoron Museum, although I would also try to see the caverns further south (plan ahead is a must). If you like western stuff, go to Bisbee, see a reenactmn of the OK corral shoot out, then make sure you go over to the St Elmo bar, another treasure of Arizona. I could go on, but only if you provide an idea of what your interests are.

We actually like to park and camp near streams or rivers. Seen the Grand Canyon twice already. We like short walks (a mile or three) we love Mexican food and the complimentary beer. Basically we have time to kill, and have never really SEEN Arizona. I think we still have the idea Arizona is all desert and there's nothing to see. I KNOW that has to be incorrect.

Well, that helps. A favorite of mine combines many things at once. So here it is...
Go up I17 north and look for exit to sedona. Go to Sedona, keep an eye out for road on right to "Red Rock Crossing". There is a nice little place to aprk your rv and enjoy the famous crossing of the river used by FOrd inmany John Wayne movies. OR- go to "Hoyles" cabins on the way up thecanyon leaving sedona. Look for parkng space as this is where you can go for an incredible hike (short, or as long as you want) up the east fork of the sycamore (trail head across from the cabins). There are old dude ranch ruins, but most importantly, miles of trail jumping back and forth across a beautiful creek that is pungent with the smells of the southwest. We usually brig a picnic basket filed with snakcs and vino, which chills nicely in the creek a few miles in. Absolutely spectacular hike. You can easily kill a couple days in this area. Further up the road (89a i think) towards flagstaff on the right is an apple orchard with fresh seasonal apple pies. Yowsa! The best! If you have time, I love Bisbee down south (St Elmo bar, mine tours, antique shopping, sightseing, haunted hotel form the 1800's (copper queen). From Bisbee, Tombstone is an easy side trio, as well as several other places of interest (great wine region near sonoita or patagnia for example). Southern arizona is an incredible place. Let m know what you decide and I will try to give you some background on the area and places to see. My buddies and I have had an annual run to southern az for years, always ending at the coper queen, yet I still feel like I have not begun to scratch the surface on things to see. If you like planes, you must go to the air museum in Tucson. Yikes!

Sliding Rock in Sedona -
During the summertime - There is a film of algae on the rocks which allow a person to slide - hence the name sliding rock - During the winter - an awesome place to do some "walking" around. http://www.visitsedona.com/
