The 2002 is Done!! (pix)

Whew! 3 years later, the '02 is done. It's awesome, and fast as all Hell. OK, there are some small, fiddly bits to get, but the car is on the road, and I'm psyched! It handles like you wouldn't believe (see stats below) and I'm dying to play cat-and-mouse with Ron's supertweaked 2.7 911.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1095522780.jpg

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1095522819.jpg

Stats:

1973 BMW 2002 (Roundie!)
2.5 liter, stroked motor with M3 crank ~175 hp and 175 lb/ft
Metric Mechanic Hi-Flo head
Weber 40 DFAV
Pertronix Ignition
5-spd gearbox
Recaro seats reupholstered in German vinyl
Ireland Stage II springs (~1.5 inch lowered)
Bilstein HD shocks
Full urethane suspension mounts (this is some STIFF suspension)
I'm running about .9 degree negative camber in the front, which is about all I can get w/o bending the struts. Over the winter, the struts come out and go to Ireland Engineering to add another degree.

On upgrade list:
Kosei Racing wheels
2.91 LSD
Maybe a pair of Weber sidedrafts... OK, not "maybe" - this will happen, it's just a question of when.

Woo freaking hoo!

JP

5 speed, Bilsteins, MM head, Recaros . . . yep, it's all there!

Absolutely beautiful!

Sweeet !
Nice car JP. Congrats!

nice.

"Woo freaking hoo!" . . .for certain. :D

How much do these things weigh? Good daily driver or rough rider?

Schrup 09-18-2004 08:39 AM

Cool car, looks great! I had a 1602 when I was stationed in Germany, it was my second favorite car ever. Like driving a go cart.

Overpaid Slacker 09-18-2004 08:44 AM

It's about 2100 lb at the curb (oil and 1/2 tank of gas).
These cars are excellent daily drivers, and low maintenance once you've dialed them in. My car is very stiffly suspended, so you feel everything on bad roads; but on good roads, it is magic. It's right at the point where if it were stiffer, it'd be too stiff. It's the most fun to drive of the toys (even the 930) and if I had only one garage space for the rest of my life, the '02 would be the car I kept.

I forgot to mention:
"Big brakes" w/ vented rotors in front and 250mm drums in the rear
Tii master cylinder
Pioneer 8500 driving Focal components.
Nardi steering wheel
ANSA Turbo exhaust
Battery re-lo to the trunk, cradled in RaceTep rear strut brace.

Very sweet! :)

I've owned a couple of 2002s myself, they are great cars even in stock/squishy mode, but this one looks like a blast. Have fun!

Nice. :D

I always look longingly at the roundies cruising around town here. In fact I saw one on the freeway this AM coming back from the beach. A very clean tii. And I get up along side it and a 50-ish woman is driving it...looks like she is the original owner. Now *that's* a car I'd like to buy...this thing was super clean.

Beautiful car JP. Makes me ponder getting a 2002 for daily driving as the 911 mutates into a track car.

CarreraS2 09-18-2004 10:31 AM

I'd love to have a 2002 as a fun daily driver.

The hardest part is figuring out the configuration! Lots of fun R-Gruppe type things to do to a 2002.

I'd like to have a fairly stock '73 Tii.

I'd also love to have a 72 or 72, with an E30 M3 engine dropped in. Fairly stock looking from the outside, but all modern running gear. Lt weight, 200 or so hp.

What we all need are 10 car garages!

nostatic 09-18-2004 10:39 AM

actually, we just need a "timeshare" system. Have 4 or 5 of us, and 4 or 5 different cars that rotate through our garages. Let's see...

2002
Audi urS4
Alfa GTV
914/6
?

Give me a 2002 Turbo and I'd die a happy man...

mikes72t 09-18-2004 01:49 PM

I am still kicking myself over selling the 73 roundie tii that I sold for parts because I was scared of the big ugly rust monster.

Looking back I really should have kept that car.

Congrats! Very nice!

The 3.91 LSD makes an incredible difference, and is perfectly matched with the e21 5-spd (did you use the MM 5sp conversion kit?). Negative camber plates should get you the front-end alignment for which you seek...

Suh-weet!

azasadny 09-18-2004 06:30 PM

What a great car! Congratulations!

JavaBrewer 09-18-2004 08:26 PM

I remember the 2002 as a VERY fun car that still was comfortable and easy to drive. That and 3.0, I've always loved those BMW releases. Looking at your pictures is making me want to brouse ebay and the trader for a good example to cruise around in. Thanks for the pics, they bring back great memories.

Yeah, good idea!

My friend had a 2002 when we were in high school, we drove it all over California and Oregon. It truly was a great car. So much fun, and a lot of soul.

He wanted his next car to be an Alfa GTV. We scoured all of So. Cal. for a year (this was pre-Internet). This was 20 years ago, and even then, all we could find were rust buckets and cars that had the original mechanical fuel injection removed. Never could find a decent one!

Totally sweet....

But of course mine would have the "Turbo 2002" written in mirror-image on the air dam... how would they know to get out of your way, otherwise??? :D
