Red Sox locker room hijinks...
BOSTON — Just when you thought things couldn’t get any weirder this weekend at Fenway Park, Pedro Martinez gave everyone something else to talk about.
Martinez entered the Boston clubhouse around 6 p.m., one hour before the start of Saturday’s game and about 2 ½ hours after the rest of his teammates. And he had company with him. Martinez arrived with a posse which included three children, or so it appeared. The child in question was in fact a man. Nelson de la Rosa, the 28-inch tall, 32-year-old smallest actor in the world and the third-smallest living man, is the new good luck charm for the Boston Red Sox. De la Rosa is Dominican and has made appearances in the Island of Dr. Moreau. “The curse is gone, he’s helping us out,” said Johnny Damon “He’s a great dude,” said Kevin Millar. “He’s hilarious. He’s awesome man.” Martinez showcased De la Rosa and allowed players to have their picture taken with him, which turned the clubhouse into somewhat of a circus. But the real freak show unraveled when Martinez let the little man run loose through the clubhouse while Red Sox players made vocal, inappropriate and tactless comments. At one point, Derek Lowe inquired if he could “buy one of those” while mimicking the voice of “Mini-Me” from Austin Powers. Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz then called out Millar and told him they thought De la Rosa had a significantly larger body part. Curt Schilling was loudly humming the theme song to Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey’s Circus. General manager Theo Epstein and manager Terry Francona were present at the scene and both showed signs of astonishment at what they had witnessed, but did nothing at the time to reprimand Martinez or to taper the situation. |
