Who has the power to bring the draft back?

I hope one of the questions in the debate tonight will be whether the draft is coming back. Dems say Bush is going to bring it back so be scared for your children. My question is, who has the power to bring it back? Does it have to be voted on by Congress or does the Pres alone have the power to reinstate it? Bush's answer to that question will affect my vote.

It has to be a special act of Congress to reinstate the military draft, then signed into law by the President.

The bill is already in the works, but is authored by 2 Democrats, one of which is Rangel D(NY). Don't remember the other one offhand.

It won't be reinstated for the simple reason that NO ONE in the military WANTS it reinstated. The quality of our armed forces is so much better because they are all volunteers. The pentagon brass do not want to go back to the days of training and equipping a bunch of people who don't want to be in the service only to have them exit the military when their 24 months are over. It's expensive. It makes for an inferior force. And, they're not having much of a problem recruiting now. The Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and Air Force actually have a surplus of troops. It's only the Army that is currently not bringing in record numbers, but they're still okay. This is a non-issue.

Classic dirty trick. There will NOT be a draft. Done.

Now let me think.....WW1....it was a conscripted army....WW2...hmmmm another bunch of drafties, Korea...more drafties...Vietnam...even more drafties...it was the scum bag protesters that gave Uncle HO HOPE that he could hang on long enough....it wasn't our troops...

NO CITIZEN ARMIES HAVE WORKED WELL FOR AMERICA...as a matter of fact we fight the best when we have Drafties....they want to get the job done in the most expeditious manner....instead of the inbred military bureaucracy way...

tabs 09-30-2004 10:15 AM

And there will be a draft.....instead of all poor inner city kids joining up because it's the only oportunity for them you might get some bright eyed college kid who will run for president someday. The manpower requirments going forward are going to press and an all volunteer army to the limit...we are going to need fresh bodies to throw into the meat grinder....Oh I forget this is not WW1...Oh well we will need them to stand guard duty at the borders or....

lendaddy 09-30-2004 10:19 AM

Tabsy my friend. The question was not whether a draft would be fair or even if it made more sense. The question was will it happen, and barring all out WWIII it will not. Congressmen simply will not fall on the sword here, they wont. "Hi, I'm Senator X, I want to be a one termer, I like the draft"

red-beard 09-30-2004 10:37 AM

Yes, I love the fact that Bush is supposedly going to Re-instate the draft when it really is being put forward by Rangel and Hollings (Both DEMs).

Lies and the lying liars that tell them...

Really, the Campaigns are not the problem. It is the "shadowy groups" that put these blatant lies out there that the media picks up on. Free speech does not protect blatant lies. It seems that on one side, the ends justify the means.

The only bills even proposed to reinstate the draft, were by 2 Democrats.

It's just another lie to scare people into voting against Bush.

It would just be so much easier if the Democrats just put up a candidate that people actually wanted to vote *for*... sigh...

U don't get it Len..the New Order is coming...it's not going to be about whats PC but about whats needed... if Bushy had an extra 100,000 men in the service...Irwreck wouldn't be a wreck..it's directly due to a manpower shortage that things are turning out the way they are....also look at the number of repeat tours of duty in Iwreck....

The Democratic Party is disentergrating right before your very eyes... it is gasping for breath on the stale worn out ideals of the last century..it will most likely cease to be a major political force in America....it is the Dinosauer of American Politics....and out of this debacle will rise the New Order....

I'm sure most of you noticed that tonite Bush emphasized a strengthened, well-equipped VOLUNTEER military. I did not notice a response to that dig from Kerry, who stated repeatedly that he wants to grow DHS and the armed forces (and domestic and foreign social programs) yet did not divulge any clues re. how he plans to fund or accomplish these things. Conscription would be the only way as we all know the Dem's would never raise taxes, eh?

red-beard 09-30-2004 07:22 PM

I am wondering how Kerry plans to increase the Military by 25% quickly. A Draft perhaps? Hmmmm. If the draft comes back, it is a Democratic proposal.

Tabs I have to disagree with what you are saying. putting 100,000 more troops on ther ground that wont fire back at mosques or at terrorists shooting from behind inocent civlians is not going to change things. We have full capibility to push the insurgents out at our pace but our pace may upset the locals and neighbors that may be on the fence. The rules of engagment are such that no matter how many troops are there it wont make a difference.
