Exclamation Merck Halts Sales of Vioxx (Worldwide )

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co. (MRK) is halting worldwide sales of its blockbuster arthritis drug Vioxx, once viewed as possibly being able to prevent some cancers, because new data from a clinical trial found an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Its stock price plunged more than 26 percent as the company said the recall will hurt its earnings.

Merck said Thursday that data from the trial showed the increased risk of heart attack and other cardiovascular complications began 18 months after patients started taking Vioxx. About 2 million people . . .cont . ..

This whole "living" thing, is getting dangerous.

A 3 billion $$ product with not much backing it up and a not so deep pipeline, we may see prices go lower then 33....

Looks like a few more people are going to be out of work down in Whitehouse, NJ.

On the other hand I feel bad for the people who found relief from this drug. Arthritis is a torturous disease.

i have a prescription for that stuff, really good for my occasional back problem. i never took it daily as prescribed, just as needed. i did not like the fact that you could not drink whilest taking it.

Just after the announcement I had lunch with an attorney. He's probably mid-60's. He sat down and said "I just came from my brother's office who is a doctor and he gave me some free pills for my pain". I jokingly said I hope they're not Vioxx because they just took them off the market. He said his brother was aware of it and gave them to him anyway.

I found this news alarming, considering that I was told that Vioxx was so much safer than ibuprophen.

I dunno . .. I suppose that at least the pain doesn't kill me.

I tried vioxx and my system said "no." Bextra has been much better tolerated, although I don't take it very often.

Whatever happened to easy to understand drugs like Morphine?

I don't understand what any of these medications do, never heard of them...

Might be a good time to wait a few weeks and buy some stock, though....

Well, the thing with Vioxx is that they did the right thing, you have to hand it to them, or the trial lawyers, there.

Merck is going to feel this big time. They had a bunch of drugs come off patent a year or so ago, with large layoffs, and now this...

Too funny Moses.

What's the REAL indication for a Cox-2 inhibitor, and I don't mean the marketing shtick by which they prescribe it for a headache. Who REALLY needs these meds?

Might there be a shift to NSAIDS, like generic Ibuprofen?

Well, you needed a prescription for this stuff, and they were expensive, plus lots and lots of commercials with jitter-bug dancing old folks.. All of those elements are sure to make some people feel better.

But basically, you can take a lot for a long time and they dont up-set the stomach.

That's it. Lots of folks with chronic osteoarthritis cannot take NSAIDS due to severe GI problems.

It's a shame the Cox-2 meds do not appear to be safe for long-term use. There are lots of people who deal with chronic pain.
