Didn't I read about a recent spate of tornados in SD, of all places?

BlueSkyJaunte 10-05-2004 01:25 PM

Hmm...yep: http://www.chaseday.com/SDoutbreak-1.htm

From a natural disaster standpoint, what is the safest state in the union? What's the most dangerous? I propose a function of loss of life and property damage as the indicator.

Hmmm...just a guess, but perhaps any four of the four-corner states?

BlueSkyJaunte 10-05-2004 02:06 PM

New Mexico just had hail for the first time in ages. Last night I think. Pretty much nothing happens there.

AZ is OK but we get occasional tornadoes, some fierce microbursts with t-storms, and of course there's the whole desert drought thing. :(

Isn't a hantavirus hanging around the four corners area?

Seriously, I think it depends on how you define the natural hazard and what level of risk you are willing to live with. I was thinking Colorado was safe, but next to Florida it's the lightning capital of the US. Most of the northern plains are subject to flooding and seriously bad winter storms. Speaking of flooding, Arizona & New Mexico have bad-a$$ flash floods, as does the desert areas of SoCal. Add tornados, hurricanes and earthquakes, there isn't any areas I can think of that is safe from everything.

Trick is to identify the threats you are willing to face and build to withstand the effects.

Keep the mice out of your attic and no hantavirus problem. That's why we have 4 cats. ;)

I wonder what that will do to the November vote.
