Democrat bill to reinstate draft defeated in the house

Everyone remembers that scare email going around about Bush trying to reinstate the draft? Well, all of us well-informed types know that the bill was drafted by Charlie Rangel (Democrat) and cosigned by Hollings ('nother dem). Anyway, it was defeated by a vote of 402-2 today. Only Rep. John P. Murtha, Pennsylvania Democrat, and Rep. Pete Stark, California Democrat, voted for the measure.

The funniest part? Rangel didn't even vote for his own bill! Proof that the whole thing was designed for no pupose other than to be able to scare college kids into thinking they'll be drafted if Bush wins.

"For two months -- especially on college campuses -- they've used the draft as a fear tactic to get people to vote against George W. Bush," House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, Texas Republican, said of Democrats.
"We've had enough of that. We're going to call them on it. The Democrats are the only people that have a bill instituting the draft; we're going to bring it out there, and we're going to put a nail in it."

That was a different Salem, oh wise one.

I know you think it is all part of the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy®, but the only legislation aimed at reinstating the draft was introduced by, and sponsored by Democrats, and only Democrats.

As to whether the bill introduced to make a political point that the military is being stretched too thin under President Bush, or a ploy by the Democrats to try and scare voters of draft age you can draw your own conclusions.
