buy a car out of state??
I prefer to buy local - but sometimes i see really cool cars and a decent price that I want to pick up. Has anyone had good/bad experiences buy a car out of state and having it shipped to you?

A friend just recieved his new 968 he bought off ebay.
Beautiful car. Great transaction. Another friend bought an ebay Miata, but flew to LA to pick it up. Told the seller he will bring a check, and if the car is as advertized, he will drive it home. He had a great drive home. |

I bought my 944 off a member here and he even drove it all the way up for me... it couldn't have been a better transaction.

It goes back the PPI. I bought mine out of state, PPI on the mechanicals was great. What I forgot to ask for was detail on the body.
Either the PO was ignorant (which I tend to believe...) or he was FOS and BS'd about the body. If you're buying out of state just make sure you get a qualified independant PPI that covers ALL the bases and it should be the same as buying one local to yourself.

Pre Purchase Inspection. Paid for by the prospective buyer...an inspection of the car by a shop...hopefully NOT connected to either buyer or seller.

I bought mine sight unseen from a PCA Instructor out of state.
After exchanging many emails and pictures, I hired a shipper to pick it up. It's been a love affair ever since! The car was exactly as described with receipts and records since new. Runs like an open sore, and has never missed a beat. Do your due dilligence and don't look back.

I cannot empasize a PPI enough. Plus PO service records.
I bought my 88 Shark out of sate and it was a PIA. Major paperwork and travel expenses. Furthermore - DONT believe everything the seller has to say. With my 88, I am content with my purchase but the owner wasn't truly up front with all the "wrongs" with the car. My experience - nothing more. Have someone do a "3rd" party inspection for you prior to the PPI. There are good cars out there - just keep your guard up. Question EVERYTHING!

And if you're seriously considering buying one out of state, having a Pelican member look it over certainly won't hurt...I can't speak for everybody, but I'm sure many members here won't mind test driving a Porsche for you.
If you're patient, you'll find your car, and it shall be nothing but pure bliss on the drive back. I'm actually considering buying an SC out of state just so I can have a nice vacation and a Porsche road trip at the same time! |

I bought all three of my Porsches out of state. I don't like shippers (too unreliable, too expensive, too slow) so I tend to fly out and drive back. In my opinion, the most important part is asking good questions and getting definite answers, along with good pictures. With those, you can usually spot the BSers. And telling people you plan to drive the car back tends to bring issues to the surface - things go from "runs great" to "uh, well, you might want to watch out for..."
