this was a pretty funny pic that went around a couple of years ago (from vwvortex board iirc).......then the lumber started showing up in other pics (photoshop).......

I remember when that pic first came out - people debating whether it was a fake.

It sure seemed fake to me! How does that back window not break out? Is the roof really that strong? How can a front wheel drive car move when it's drive wheels are barely touching the ground? How could people really be that dumb?

But, based on your link, it looks to be real. A funny blast from the past.

this is from the from the Snopes page...

The materials were loaded at Home Depot. The Home Depot store manager made the customer sign a waiver before loading.

Although, I'm not sure if something like this would relieve the mamager from ALL responsibility if something were to have happened.

I say the pic is a fake. You can see what 13 sheets does to a transporter and they have a little load capacity, they were designed to carry 500 lbs, IIRC. Although the sheets on the car don't look like 5/8, the stack is higher (I count about 25). PLUS, the lumber.

At that angle, the strings would have snapped and the load would have slid off. I have carried my share in 30 years as a carpenter.

I once had a moment. I loaded some lumber on a rack that I had built for a PU. I put the rack legs in the stake pockets. About a block from the job, the bottoms of the stake pockets gave out and the load crashed onto the cab! Caved it in a little, but scared me and my helper pretty damn good.

It was then that I noticed that lumber racks have angle iron stops on the legs so this doesn't happen. Duh.

I agree, it looks sooo fake.

But what about the OTHER pics, taken from different angles, by other people, of the same scene?

I like the rack loaded on the lumber better!

Transporters can do a lot more than 500 lbs; as of '63, they had a 1-ton rating, prior to that I think it was 1500 or so (I should know this stuff!)

The manifest for the T1-11 said 2100lbs, don't know if that's accurate or not.

It's definitely twisting some part of the frame. Look at how the doors don't match up. Maybe the roof didn't crush because it's like the boiled frog thing.
