Lose images on your Digi camera? Try this....

I've tried a couple of the freeware/shareware image/file recovery products before with less than stellar results. There can be many reasons one loses images...it seemed that one of my digital cameras hicupped and all of a sudden I have "No Images". $hit!!

I figured I'd see if any new products would come up on a Google search and I found this: http://www.softwarepatch.com/software/smartrecovery.html

It made one pass of all sectors on my SD card and came up dry....Oh well. Then it retried in "intensive mode"....Hmmm, OK.

Every one of my 67 files was recovered. Cool !!! They claim to be able to recover on just about any media, even after a format....Just like NDD.

Figured I'd pass the word on.

Wow! Thanks for the tip Rick. I've got an IBM Microdrive that went south on me. It's got a ton of images. Was going to send it in to a data recovery company, but I'll give this a try first. -- Curt

Curt, Let us know how it works out. The overview say this works on microdrives. Hopefully it's not physically damaged.

I've got the program downloaded but didn't have time to play with it yet. Hopefully, it will work. I'm not sure if it's a 'mechanical' problem with the Microdrive or what. But it's really soured me on Microdrives. Now that other memory cards are available in 1 gig sizes, I'm not sure the Microdrive has any benefits.

I still swear by the Norton disk tools. Worth every penny...

Great program. Just used it on a Memory Stick that had some kind of 'read error' and recovered all the photos. The IBM Microdrive definitely has a mechanical problem. Making a weird noise and can't even get the computer to recognize it. Going to have to send that one in.

The Microdrive came with my Fuji S1 as a free promo. Glad I didn't pay for it. Other than a slight speed advantage, I really can't see any reason to buy a memory card that is subject to mechanical failure.

Microdrives can get alot more info into a relatively small space. But mechanical system like this are prone to failure.

I love Digital memory. It is pretty much the best way to go for most any storage and/or high speed application. As storage size and access speed increase it wont be long before mainstream Cam Corders use a memory card. IMO it has pretty much eclipsed the Mini-DVD camcorder.

I'm using my digital camera to take video clips more and more. It's rare that I take more than a few minutes of video anyway.
With SD cards going for $75 a gig the fun is just beginning...

I tried to use this program, but it only gives the options for C, D, and CDROM drives.

When I plug either of my digital cameras into the USB port, the computer recognizes them...but this program will not recognize them as individual drives.

Hmm, I placed my SD card in a USB based reader and it came up as j: drive......It recovered all the images off of that drive.

cegerer 10-18-2004 09:21 AM

Sonic - ya might have to use an external reader. I'm using a basic PNY multi-card reader plugged into a USB. Everything comes up: F, G, H, and I.
