What is the norm for response/payment on eBay items sold?
I can't seem to find the rule or the rule of thumb on when the buyer is supposed to contact seller. I remember when Ferrari2Porsche got his panties in a bunch when the buyer didn't contact him in a little more than 24 hrs. on a tranny at about $900.
I kind of know what he was going thru now. Yes, it's only been a little more than 24 hrs for me. We're talking about $1700 for some wheels, no chump change. I have said nothing to the buyer except congrats on an email and sent an invoice. I can wait the polite period, whatever it is. The thing is, I have two eager 2nd chance buyers waiting. Believe it or not, this is the first thing I've sold on eBay. What's the official rule and rule of thumb? I kinda like the eBay thing. Got a litle more money than I had asked for here a while back. If they go to a 2nd chance, it will be right at what I wanted. While I really prefer to buy and sell right here, The eBay thing might do me some good. I didn't link to the sale here. Pelicans had first shot a month ago. After two weeks, I pulled the wheels off the board and waited until there were less around. The item was a set of Al Reed polished deep six Fuchs. |

3 days for buyer and seller to make contact. I'd personally wait 5 days, but I'd definitely make contact with number 2 in line, just in case.

I wouldn't sweat it if its only been a day so far. Maybe the buyer is 'gently' breaking the news to his wife

Chances are Friday is payday.
I think the Ebay regs say that arrangements for payment and shipping should be made within 10 days of the close of the auction. I try to buy stuff where I can pay by Paypal and normally send the cash immediately upon the auction close. JCM

I actually sold my first ebay item too last week. I was paid within 3 days so be patient and watch your Paypal account and if they don't pay, you can always leave very nice feedback.

There are still a lot of peoples out there that read their emails every 2 or 3 days. I will usually give 5 days to the buyer to pay me before complaining.

Hi Milt,
I post payment terms on my auction ad depending on the item - usually 5 or 7 or 10 days ... some buyers are great and pay within seconds on winning an auction and others take the full 5/7/10 days - After 3 days, I send them another invoice with a message asking them to contact/email me. I would definitely wait 3 days, send them another invoice and ask them to email you within a certain timeframe ... hope it works out!! |

Thank you. I appreciate the info. Three days for a reply in order to make arrangements sounds right to me. I always make contact right away. I probably jump the gun a little and don't even wait for an invoice. I have to agree that what Lynn says might not be how I'd like to be treated.
Funny thing about my buyer. He/she is in Costa Mesa, about 20 miles from me, yet all of his activity shows about 3 AM our time. I thought he could have been out of the conUS, or on the East Coast, until I saw his zip code at the close of the auction. Maybe he is a day sleeper and works nights. I'll see what happens tonight. |
