new antifreeze makes car overheat!

I am a new 911 owner, (1976 911S) and when I first bought it I tried doing some routine maintenance like replacing plugs and filters. I opened up the coolant-tank in the engine compartment and noticed it wasn't full, so I just added some coolant until it was full. (yes, I added 60% coolant and 40% water) The engine started overheating and now it wont start at all, it just makes a clicking noise (I checked the battery). Was I supposed to use a different antifreeze? Thanks for your help. -Lamar

You have to make sure to use PHOSPHATE FREE antifreeze.

And distilled water.

This is a Porsche, man! You can't just use Pep Boys anti-freeze and water from a garden hose!

Your car is AIRCOOLED and does not take any coolant. I think you added to the oil tank=BAD. The big fan you see when you open the engine lid is what draws the air to cool the engine... You need to drain the oil (which is now oil and water). Please tell me the thread is a joke! 2.7's are known for their own problems nevermind added problems from water in the oil!

Lamar, if you are in fact telling the truth, would you mind telling us exactly where the "coolant tank" is in the engine compartment that you filled with water/antifreeze?

If it is toward the right of the engine with the neck coming up from the rear fender, that is the oil-tank that you have now added water/antifreeze to. Hopefully you didn't run the engine too long (although since you said it won't start any longer, it sounds like the damage has been done unfortunately), but the first thing you should do now is to drain all the oil out of the tank and the engine sump and refill with fresh oil. It might be beneficial to just take it to a mechanic at this stage, however that's your call.

In my Aston Martin the oil fill is in front of the engine, right at the radiator, and once when I first got the car I went to a gas station where they do full service. I open the hood, and the "mechanic" flips open the oil fill, and say "water right?" last time I let someone touch the car.

Actually, in the Aston Martin, I HAVE to use Castrol brake fluid. something about the "Aniline" properties of the fluid and the natural rubber seals. I found the hard way that using regular brake fluid f's up the rubber real bad. Oh, I can use synthetic brake fluid too.

Everyone knows it's suppose to be 50-50 antifreeze to water - not 60-40. Geez.

Gee, I hope you checked the radiator cap...it should be pressure rated for 16 PSI. Also, please allow me to be the first to congratulate you for selecting the most desireable 911 varient ever made.

Reminds me of my old '72 model. Had someone try to put gas in the oil tank. It had the door on the outside RH fender and to someone did not know better could have been a gas tank...

Heard that Porsche replaced hundreds of engines on warranty that year and switched back to the old style forever after this.

Gotta be a joke.

If the guy DID fill the oil tank with H2O and ran the car would it really have run long enough to over heat?
