9th inning weirdness

What is going on here? Why did the police run onto the field? I was in the other room talking to my girlfriend on the phone (blahhhh) when this happened. The announcers are worthless for info at this point.

Fans were throwing balls, etc onto the field. Mostly precautionary, in case the fans get out of control.
