Anyone own/use a DVD disc camcorder?
 

I'm looking at the Sony DVD201. This is not for me or for in the car. Thoughts?

Then you only need to be 5 DVDRW to record on. You dump the MPG to a 200 gig hard drive, and have a mirror for drive failure. No need for stacks of tapes or discs. Just raids.

I have the Sony CDR digital camera. The only things I don't like about it are the long startup time; it nags you to use Sony-brade discs, and you have to go thru a special fixing stage on the camera before you can actually use the images. I like the idea of not having to dump via firewire, though. The new 2hz+ box I just put together *still* drops frames :(

That's it? No one else use these?

Is your friend looking at this type/model for any particular reason? I have used DV and Digital 8 camcorders before. The problem I heard with DVD disc camcorders is the abilty to edit/rewind/erase etc. On the otherhand, DV camcorders are incredible, I just had one on a tripod on the last P-car run and the video came out really well with the steadyshot. I am working on converting it to DVD now. The advantage to a DVD camcorder is the direct playback in a DVD player. I don't know if I like this though - recording capacity of one disc: 20 minutes at HQ setting; 30 minutes at SP setting; 60 minutes at LP setting. It is definitely newer technology but I would prefer DV though as I have no problem dumping via firewire and I like the ability to edit and customize my videos via the computer.

Chris, when I said it's not for me, I should have said it's for my wife. I don't touch her stuff so she leaves my toys alone as well. We don't share things like cameras or computers. Hell, I'm not all that exited about her Boxster, but that's fine, 'cause it's hers. I just pay for it. There again, she has never ever asked anything about how much money I spend on cars.

So, she wants at DVD camcorder for only one reason and it's not the reason you should want one for. She wants to play her unedited discs right now in the laptop or DVD player, no muss, no fuss. OK by me.

Just want to know what I'm buying her, that's all.
