The American Flag

This probably does not deserve its own thread, but I feel strongly about it, and didn't want it buried in an obscure discussion. Those of you who want to think of liberals as anti-American, should stop reading this now.

I live in a tiny, quaint little town. I live near one edge of town and City Hall is in the center of town. My house is about five blocks from City Hall. There is an American flag that flies above City Hall. It is large, and probably silk, and so it catches any wind that is present, but it moves in a slow and dignified fashion because of its size I suppose. There are spot lights trained on it at night. From my driveway, it peeks just above and between a couple of pine trees.

I never get tired of seeing that thing. It gives me goose bumps every time, and sometimes it makes my eyes wet.

God bless America.

Whoa. Of all the people here, this thread includes posts by Steve and myself. And we agree.

Like I say. God bless America.

Personal pet peeve:
People that buy $hitty flags made in China that leave them up to become tattered and faded. If you're going to put it up, at least have some respect for the thing, sheesh.

I should probably get a new one soon.

That link that 1d10t posted is a great story. It reminds me how proud of the guys I served with I am, and how much I appreciate the guys that are still serving, and their respect for each other.

On a cynical note, this same feeling is painfully absent in corporate America. Bah! Nasty, filthy, tie-wearing animals!

That's a ridiculous statement, Purry boy. It's easy to see what you're getting at: it's far too easy to lump current events in with the appearance of our flag. I'm sure we can find some nastiness Canada has created and attach that to the maple leaf.

This, btw, is what Purrybonker posted before he thought to edit himself in his last post:

"This I can't leave alone -

superman's (iconically speaking) goosebumps and eyewetting - while considering the flag is very close to the root of anything/everything that is bad about America. It is exactly that emotion (pride, melancoly - or any other piddling emotation) that eclipes collective reason as to how America sees itself in relation to the rest of the world.

Pride had a place in the building of America. Now it's time to evolve to a plane of existance that seeks sustenance in intellect and compassion rather than base emotions.

I'll duck now..."

You can duck, Canuck, but you can't hide! (The quote+backspace keys are not your friends).

With comments like those that Purry posted and retracted, why would any Americans (notice I capitalized it) give a rats a$$ what purry (notice I didn't capitalize purry) thinks.

Well, it may be one of the signs of the apocalypse that I would actually support anything posted by our misguided socialist friend from the Peoples Republic of Washington.

But I share his sentiment for the symbol of our great nation. People have DIED to protect that flag. Even more people have labored for the last couple hundred years to preserve it, and the system of ordered liberty that it represents.

Military types have a neat little flag-honoring daily ceremony called "colors." It happens at 0800 and sunset every single day. We play a little song, and the flag goes up or down. If you can hear the music, you have to stop whatever you're doing and wait until it's over. If you're in uniform, you have to face the music and salute.

When I was younger, I thought it was stupid. I'd watch the clock, memorize sunset times, and avoid colors by any means possible. Then I had an epiphene (which I can't spell correctly). All of a sudden, the flag had meaning to me, and honoring the flag as a symbol of the sacrifices that have made our country great suddenly came into perspective for me. Now, if I'm near a door, I'll go outside just to salute the flag for colors.

Call me crazy, but at least call me a patriot.

Dan

glad to contribute toward at least something of a consensus of the American left and right. Both sides wrap themselves in the flag like no other nation on earth.

The guy had the class to retract - you shoulda had the class to let it slide.

We all have a slip betwixt brain and mouth from time-to-time.

You haven't contributed ANYTHING, other than to reinforce for the participants of this forum your profound disdain for the United States.

But it goes further than that. Yours is not merely an objection to particular policies of the Bush Administration, which many others here have expressed, with various levels of maturity and support.

Your statements here are insulting to EVERY American irrespective of politics. They contribute NOTHING: they further NO debate or agenda.

I suggest you find another forum for the expression of your "opinions."

Class denotes patriotism and vice-versa? That's a new one.

Stupid is as stupid types, Joe.

I second that. Purry is at the forefront of a distinct group who NEVER have anything positive to say here. So Soup makes a post that tries to unite some of the divide here...and you've got to keep spewing your venom.

Hey, I think there's a spot open over on those MTV forums that's just your intellectual speed.

Soup, great post. Sorry it got derailed.
