The Jewel Heist

I love my job. Especially on days like today. I get a call on the way to the office this morning regarding a large residential structure fire. The kicker? On the 3rd floor, there is over $100,000 in jewelry and they need me to figure out how to access it ...... the 2 stories below are burned away. The 3rd floor is literally teetering, waiting for a gust of wind to blow it into the basement. After evaluating the situation, I figure the only reasonable method is to use a crane and a man-basket and drop in thru the roof. So we order a large crane which shows up a couple hours later. Our main objective is an 'armoir' located in the middle of the room. We can't get the man-basket close enough so we lasso the armoir with a piece of rope and drag it into the basket - mission accomplished: $100,000+ in jewels secured! !

The doors to the room with the jewels:

The armoir withe the jewels!

Forensic structural engineer. On fires, I'm the guy that goes in first to make sure it's safe for the fire investigators, etc. This one was a bit unusual for sure. We partially dropped one drawer out of the armoir dragging it into the basket. A few jewels fell into the debris pile in the basement which will hopefully be recovered later. There was also a "bucket of pearls" in the adjacent bathroom that we couldn't get to due to the real possibility of a roof/chimney collapse on top of us. That will get knocked into 'the hole' and be fished out by somebody else .....

Very Cool, I normally visit after you are done. I do Forensic/Claims accounting of the damages suffered (mostly business interruption analysis).

Juan - cool, a buddy of mine who also shares space in the same office complex is a Forensic Accountant as well. Very interesting work, particularly those Party Store losses where there are 2 sets of books ......

Shouldn't the title of this thread be "The Jewel Hoist"?
