How to look for job in Seattle
My son (age 21) will be graduating with a BS in psychology (experimental and social). He wants to move to Seattle with his girl friend (a graduating nursing student, who will have no trouble finding a job). I am urging him to start looking before moving. What would be the best way for someone in that position to look for a job in Seattle? I am thinking maybe he should look for a marketing firm that could use someone with skills in social survey work.
His previous employment has been working at a drug counselling clinic, and a BMW motorcycle shop! Any ideas? |
Have him start looking at www.monster.com and also maybe subscribe to a local Seattle newspaper online and look at the classfieds.

www.seattletimes.com would be a start and after that it depends on what he wants to do for a vocation.

his gf should be able to write her own ticket. many hospitals are offering HUGE incentives to go to work for them. i suggest they look around for an area to live out of seattle. they will find the cost of living will be substancially lower with a slight geographic shift.

Monster.com is a great resource for finding out who is hiring. Horible at actually getting a job. Companies receive 10s of thousands of applications for every job posted. They use filters for key words to narrow the field. Resume has to be extremely creative to get through the filters. That being said, networking is still the number one way to find a job.
Best thing to do is to get a Seattle based address so that his resume looks like he lives in Seattle. That way, he won't be eliminated just because he's from out of town. He will then want to get his cell phone changed to a Seattle number (or get another cell phone). From there, network, network, network. Use monster and the local paper to find out who's hiring. Then, go find out who might know someone at that company. As well, use the local universities to network. If you go to the hiring / placement center, they might assist if you approach them properly.
