What are you willing to buy used?

I was just curious what types of things you would buy used and which things you would not? Obviously cosmetic/medical items are meant to be new but what about everything else.

Ok, What are you thinking of buying used??

id10t 10-27-2004 04:24 PM

Sometimes "used" is new... my wife finds quite a lot of baby clothes in consignment shops that still have store tags, stickers, etc. on them.

Nothing special. I was debating about a laptop but I don't know if I need one. The last one I bought died 2 months out of a 1 year warranty which doesn't make it a good investment to buy new again as the first time I bought all the accessories with it and now they are useless. Has anybody had any luck with used laptops?

Of course, their is always another Porsche but these aren't used, they are "previously obsessed over."

So please continue and let me know what you have bought used that you shouldn't have or what you would buy used?

I only buy "refurb" computer equipment, especially laptops. First run Laptops are always too expensive.

I've bought some new cars, and most used (including the two used Porsche's that I own or had owned). Though, my wife and I only prefer manual transmission cars, and it's hard to find them in certain models.

We've always bought new desktop PC's. Camera's I buy new. My wife finds about 50% of our kids clothes in resale shops (many with the tags still on them). We been given 4 laptop computers (toss aways from my wife's work - she's a PC tech). Two are newer IBM's and are rock solid. The other two were problems...

I bought all of my high end (sort of) home stereo used including my McIntosh poweramp, Adcom preamp and Onkyo Integra 2070 cassette desk (which has long since failed...). Bought a new CD player though back in '91 and she's still going strong. I've bought a bunch more lesser quality audio equipment, all new including two Onkyo recievers (1 surround, 1 stereo), new home theater sub, theater speakers, DVD players, etc. I bought one used Sony CD player on eBay for $10 and it's rock solid.

We only buy new TV's when old one's fail. Though I haven't bought a new TV since 1998...

As a working musician (drummer), I only buy new electronic drum equipment for stuff I use on paying jobs. I would not hesitate to buy used or vintage accoustic drums (and have several vintage drums), though my main accoustic drum kit was bought new in '86. All of my band's sound equipment is bought new since we have to rely on it night after night.

Funiture is always bought new in my household (the little we have).

How's that??

That's what I am looking for Jay, Thanks. How did you find a wife that only prefers manual transmission? I can only hope to find one like that.

She grew up with 5 older brothers who were muscle car nuts, so she knows what a real car is (rear drive, manual trans).

Here's her toy (since everyone likes pics - though everyone might not like this car...but she does):

Well said, Tabby.

One thing I look out for, if on Ebay looking for a deal on a used item, ALWAYS check to see what it goes for new. Many times it's cheaper to by new than used.

Dantilla 10-28-2004 06:44 AM

I buy DVD's at a pawn shop.

I used to buy stereo stuff at a high-end shop. Now if I ever need anything, I'll get it at a pawn shop. The CD player in my garage has been fine for years. When it goes bad, I'll go get another cheap one at the pawn shop again.

Drives a couple of friends nuts! They know I have money in the bank, and don't get it. It's worth it just for their reactions.

mattdavis11 10-28-2004 07:14 AM

Pawn shops! Yep. I have a brother that does the curb side shopping, yikes! We always seem to end up with more junk than what we put out. Thank goodness he just got married and moved out. OTOH, I scored him a tripod blind that was put out to the curb a couple of months ago, it was Christmas in August!:D

juanbenae 10-28-2004 07:50 AM

i buy all my music CD's used now through amazon.

as tabs mentioned furniture. i got a great sectional couch from a high end consignment shop. it appeared to have been at a vacation house, there was a bit of fading on one end, but other than that great shape. its pretty used up now though. i ride that thing often.

gaijinda 10-28-2004 07:59 AM

Used tools are o.k. And can be a good deal.

Bob's Flat-Six 10-28-2004 08:32 AM

I think clean used cars are the way to go after buying three new ones.
And buy used. I'm thinking not just a couple of years but more like 5 to 6 + years if their well kept.

I have a 1995 Chevy Silverado I bought new for 20K and it just turned 100k miles and is probably only worth about 5-6 grand but it's a great truck I wouldn't be afraid to take anywhere.

So if you don't have to have the latest model I think in this age there are some good used vehicles out there ( in Cali anyway) if you take a little time to find them.
Hey, I've spent 30k plus for the other new ones I bought, and these days I can think of better ways to spend that kind of bucks.

Sorta been there done that kinda thing. :)
