considering a 240Z-- any good bbs?
 
I know there are a few past or present Z fans around here. There's an LA car on ebay that I'm considering. Anyone know of a good 240Z message board(s)?

Yes they did. Upgrade kits are available as well for a minimal fee.
I cannot emphasize enough how inexpensive these cars are to maintiain.
Regarding the 73's.....if you find a sharp one, I wouldn't disregard it because it a 73-just besure it has the backdated SU carbs from the 70-72's.

damn! that's like porn! sweet engine.

Is the '72 better b/c it lacks the emissions stuff that came w/ '73? Different engine? Any structural/body differences?

I only thought '72 cars had better carbs etc., but since I'm looking at one w/ a 2.8 block and the engine is rebuilt, all those "bad" '73 parts have been discarded?

You are correct in your assumptions about the 73's. In fact that top one (british racing green) was a 73 that got away from me. It was completley redone with a 2.8 equipped with Su's. But that silver one with the hood open is truely the 'one that got away'. Incredible car for 10K.

The Zs are cheap, reliable, easy to work on, and lots of fun. They also RUST worse than any pre-1976 911 you have ever seen. A friend of mine went through three of them. Rust, rust, and more rust. Buyer beware.

LOL, so I've noticed. To get one that's in good shape, body wise, it seems like the price is equal to a basic slightly worn T (ie: $10K)

thanks again for your links. On one of those forums I managed to find the seller of the car that I was considering. Seems like he's been trying to sell the car on that forum for some time. (4 separate attempts/posts)

Searching his other posts, it appears like he is completely mechanically inept, and has even put bondo on the car instead of dealing w/ rust in a proper way. Oh well, I'll still be on the lookout...

Oh yea I forgot to mention the rust issue. Maybe I was subconsciously assuming that we all know ANYTHING up to the mid 70's rusts,lol!
I finally took a look at the Z you were considering, and she looked a little rough.

Perhaps the downside of the Z-car being easily obtainable/maintained is that it allows more non-enthusiasts (specifically people with little money ) to buy these cars and not maintain them the way they should. It's amazing that for all the Z-cars made, I feel it's harder to find a cleaner 72 240 than a cleaner 911 of similar vintage.

So if I could give you any advice, it's be extremely patient. There are still good one's out there to be found. traderonline.com was always my hunting ground.
If your not into stock, the hot ticket seems to be a 240 powered with either a 280z 2.8 liter (or a 280zx turbo) mated to the 280 5 speed. Add a hotter cam and some Mikuni triple carbs and your in business (and put some big reds on there so you can stop!) There are even a few V8 and Skyline powered beasts out there! Check out hybridz.org for more info on that.

That said, one of these days, alongside my (future) 3.6 powered 73T and my (future) vintage Ferrari, I would love to have a 72 240z with an inline twin turbo 6 from a last generation Skyline breathing under the hood. Nevertheless, extensive body stiffening will be in order!!!

p.s.-Do a google search for Tod Kaneko. He has a wicked fast 240z (as well as a rotary powered 510) that were "Turbo Magazine" cover cars awhile back.

LOL Paul, I'm not looking for the beasts but I know they are out there. If I find an all-stock original, that's fine. If I find one w/ a 2.8 and 5 speed, that has seen some minor upgrades, that's good too. What I'm looking for is a nicely balanced machine.

V8's and Skyline power would be extreme and pricey for me.

I think I've seen/read articles on Kaneko's car. (It's orange, right?) That guy is a perfectionist.

Again, thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Keep in mind..the 260 and 280 models are almost as fast and enjoyable as the 240...according to the car guy press of the time. Of course, their "job" is to sell the new cars...

right on the rust. "Fairlady" is the japanese marketing title name, just as the roadsters were. i've seen a few z imports with rhd locally and they all have Fairlady on the back. my dad had a 710 that had "Violet"rather than the 710 emblem.

My buddy of mine here in Kansas City is restoring a FairladyZ right now. Right Hand Drive. He's doing the 280z turbo setup. It should be a fun car.
