How much should carpeting cost?
We have a small portion of our home that needs carpeting. THe area is 855 sq ft, and includes 6 stairs. There are also about 9 feet of transition from the carpet area to marble flooring where we do not want the carpeting to tuck under with no visible threashold.
I am just wondering what the going rate for carpet, padding and installation should be be. We received one estimate but at a little over $3k it seems a little high. Anyone purchased carpet recently? And for you guys in So Cal, any recommendations in the Orange County?

Small portion is 855 sqft? WTF? In most houses I know, that is 1/3 to 1/2 of the entire house, and I'm not on welfare or anything.
Sorry, I have no idea how much carpet costs, but I do know the range is pretty broad. Good luck.

Very hard question to answer as carpet prices can have huge variations. Cost will be dictated by type/style, quality, optional protective treatments etc.

The next door neighbor has 3 guys installing new carpet throughout his house as I type this. They paid $1.99 sqft bought at Lowes and something like $0.61 sqft installation.
Edit Note this is within an hour of the carpet capital of the world, Dalton, Georgia. This is probably a better then usual price.

That is about right for good stuff, we paid $42.50 a SQ YRD with upgraded padding. Carpet shops are a dime a dozen, so find one you like the owner.

the stairs and your transition area are a big labor hit. try to get the carpet yourself and you might avoid the contractors mark up on material.
as my pop says alot as of late, "if spending that money keeps her happy, quiet and out of the garage, it is money well spent". the garage is where he keeps his z06, go-kart, bmw streetbike, and etc. in this case he buys the carpet, keeps his mouth shut, and loads his go-kart for the races, in peace and quiet.
