Any graphic designers out there?
I’ve recently started doing freelance work and am having difficulty with determining the appropriate fees.
Work involved includes a logo redesign and 2 tri-fold brochures. Does anyone have any advice as to where I can look for advice? |
My wife does this. There is a book out there called "ethics in pricing" or something.
She can't remember but it's at home and I'll try to find it later if no on e else helps. Even then it's still just ballpark stuff. |
When I do freelance side work, I charge 4x as much as I make at my regular job...

Your fee is what their budget is. Too much and you don't get the job. Too little and they'll use and abuse you from here on out.

I approach it from this point. There are at least two or more people in your business.
The owner/salesperson and the employee that performs the actual work. You need to charge enough so that they both get paid. Don't be afraid to charge to much. You can't negotiate up later on. And get an agreement in writing. Spell out payment terms, kill fee, how many revision rounds etc. DO NOT hand over finished work until yo have been paid. Scott |
Thanks, guys, for all your comments. Actually it was my girlfriend who posted the original message lastnight; she has a meeting tomorrow am with a client that she has done minor work for this summer.
She now has the potential to do a complete logo identity/brochure renovation for this firm, and was unclear on how much she should charge. You tips and feedback has definitely given her some direction. Thanks! Paul (and Stefanie) |
Look for a copy of "Graphics Artits Guild Handbook: Guidelines for Pricing and Ethics". Not hard and fast numbers but ideas to work from.

Yea, that's the one.
