Fair and square
Although it's beyond mystifying to a lot of the population, it's clear the majority of voters want GWB for four more years.
So be it. At least it's not a 'hanging chad' situation, or one where voting tricks could account for the difference. It was a win, fair and square. So congratulations to you Bush voters. You have the white house and an even stronger Congress to push through your agenda. Just remember what happened last time that was the situation.

I hope everyone remembers that the President represents all Americans and while GW has the majority, the time has come to listen to what everyone has to say. Tech, I wish Kerry could be as gracious as you.

Yeah, actually I'm relieved that it's not a cliffhanger. I'm disappointed, but I guess I'll just resign myself to 4 more years of recession and repression.

Better in Person

I too am here to take my meds. It's a hard pill to swallow this morning, even some unforecasted drizzle on my windshield as I made my way into work.
I just hope that W has taken in what has occured in that just under half of the nation is not behind his act and maybe adjust it to reach out to the other 49% of the nation. somehow I doubt it. Thing that bugs me is that it will be another 4 years of my retirement investments treading water with little to no gain. As kurt mentions, he is my president for four more years and I hope it gets better than the last four. All hail the chief? well, lets not get too carried away.

I remember when Clinton first came into office in '92. He had a real solid electoral college win and both houses of Congress by a big margin. He also was able to appoint a couple of Supremes.
He got pretty ambitious with a big tax increase and trying to take over health care. The consequence of that ambition is the GOP juggernaut that you see today. You have to use your political capital while you have it, so Clinton did the logical thing. But by overplaying his hand, he opened the door to going on a decade now of GOP control. W should use up his political capital, but not to the point of dropping his party in the grease. Having said that, that's the beuaty of a second term. You can do whatever you like, because there's no having to get reelected. The Dems still could try and go after him on the Abu Graib prison thing. I know that's been discussed. I think that's a non-starter though.

Tech -
I tip my hat to you, sir. I'd have tried to be as gracious as you are about the situation if the roles had been reversed, but I don't know if I'd have pulled it off. In fact, I know I'd still have thrown in a gloat about Daschle. [EDIT -- see, I just did I can't help myself!]I, however, am hoping that now that W's been re-elected, our information providers can tone down the maligning. They did everything they could and lost, so I hope that they realize that more than half of the population of the country (by votes, anyway) don't buy their crap. JP

The D's aren't as bad as the R's make them out to be after all. Very nice gesture Tech, widebody.

I don't post here much, but I feel like writing something so I can get my mind off the election and get some work done!
I am a moderate democrat and voted for Kerry. As techweenie said, it's mystifying to me that so many people approve enough of the the job GWB has done to give him a second chance. But more dismaying than this is the hatred and contention I've seen on various forums and message boards. One of the first things I read this morning was something to the effect of "I guess we've seen that the majority of Americans hate liberals more than liberals hate Bush." Not to be cliche, but why do we have to hate? Many of my friends and family members disagreed on who to support, but we haven't stopped liking one another. Dems and GOPs share the same problem - the vocal minority that makes the rest look bad and polarizes the groups. Dems have MoveOn and Micheal Moore and Republicans have Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly. Each side hates what the other has to say, and therefore identifies his ideology with anybody who shares the same party name. It seems that Bush was re-elected, and with much less fanfare than last time around. I hope this narrow margin of victory displays without question the polarization of this country and that Bush takes to heart that he governs and represents everyone, not just portion who voted for him. I hope he makes good on his campaign promise of four years ago to be a uniter and not a divider.

What's weird - although I should have expected this - is that I don't feel as bad that Kerry lost as I do that Bush won. OTOH, I don't think a Kerry victory would have brought orgasmic joy; rather that relief you get when you finally pull your mangled hand out of the wood chipper.

Yep, looks like a fair-and-square win so...congratulations. Yes, I am completely mystified and of course deeply disappointed but hey, that's the way the cookie crumbles. I do not share what appears to be some hope that Dubya will 'bring the parties together' or 'unite the nation' or anything like that. I think he lacks both the skill and the inclination. Being a second term president, and with the popular vote, I think he's going to twist the knife. But...that's his decision since he won.

I agree w/ you Tech. Congratulations to Bush, & thank God that the outcome is seemingly clear & fair!
Lets hope he recognizes that the promise to be a "uniter, not a divider" is not just an empty campaign slogan to be parroted off to win votes, but a goal that he is obliged to attain for the betterment of the country. |
