I believe it. I have a friend that was pulled over for speeding on Oahu in the early 80's, by a VW Beetle being used as a Police car.

Vw Bug I dont think so. They are required to have a V8.
I knew a cop on Maui back in the early 70's who had a Charger with a Hemi.

Hmm...haven't seen those as cop cars yet on Oahu. BUT, there are a lot of 4Runners, G35s, Maximas, Altimas, Camrys, and even Saturns running around with them blue lights on top. So no...it doesn't have to have a V8 in it.

SteveStromberg, are you calling me a liar?

I've seen many without V8's.

When I was selling cars in the early 80's at Cutter Ford.
I sold Mustangs with the V8 to officers, the Turbo 2.3 was offered but HPD had to have V-8 power.

Here is the link to Hawaii county Police Regs the cars are V-8 or Largest 6.

Now thats wild!!!

It looks like a Chrysler 300, which is a relatively inexpensive car. ($30K here - $25K US) But the bling on the wheels is an interesting addition.

Any story on this? What's it's purpose/use?

Anybody islanders know if any departments are hiring experienced officers down there? I'd move there in a heartbeat...

Jim

Jim,
HPD (Honolulu PD) is always hiring, here's the HR page: http://www.honolulupd.org/hrd/index.htm. However, Im not sure if they take transfers from out of state. All I know is a retired officer from NYPD (who was actually at the scene on 9/11) went through the academy here again and is starting out as a "rookie," even though he's a 20+ year veteran. I'm not sure of the details...try giving them an email or call.

As far as the 300 goes, cops here are allowed to use personal vehicles as police vehicles (they are given a vehicle allowance) after a few years on the force. This is to reduce the amount of maintanance and inventory that the department needs to keep on hand. However, you can only use them for up until they are 10 years old. There is a Tahoe around my area that runs around with 20" IROC replica wheels.

Its all about respect

Folks stand around googling the wheels while the officer comes up behind them and slaps the cuffs on...

Why is there always a cartoon in my head?

Back in the 80's Don Beyer Volvo sold Volvos to the police in Falls Church (City), VA. It was kinda funny to see. You could buy the beat down used ones off his used car lot every once in a while. He stopped selling to the PD when he became a state politician.
