Simple? home network problem

This should be easy, but I'm just not finding the setting to change so I hope someone's been there.

2 PCs at the house connected via cross-over cable, PC #1 has modem/dial-up, PC #2 has no modem.

Just upgraded #2 from Win98 to XP, haven't yet set up any file sharing, yet now whenever #2 is turned on it dials the modem on #1 and connects.

I want to be able to share the modem, but I don't want it to auto-connect.

Any ideas/answers? I'm sure it's a checkbox that needs uncheck but I'll be darned if I can find it.

You are heading in the right direction. I have seen the area you need to go but my current system is running W2000 and its set up differently. Getting old and memory is fading (a margarita may help!)

Do you have a tab in the control panel saying "internet or internet connection or properties?" W2000 does and there is the "always dial my default connection" box to check.

PS XP is a POS OS... try W2000! Its better and does not do things without asking like XP does.

Not sure if this will fix it for you, but, on both computers, take a look inside Internet Explorer.

On the Menu Bar, select Tools > Internet Options and then choose the Connections tab. There are 3 choices you can choose from for internet connections. Give these a look.

One other thing to look at is the dialup connections themselves. See if there is a configuration setting there you can change. I have cable at home and haven't had to mess with DUN settings for quite a while. Then again, I COULD be just getting old! ;)

Go to Properties for My Network Places. Right click on the dialer you use for Internet dialup. Go to its Properties. Next go to the Advanced tab. Check the box "Allow other network users....".

I am guessing that you previously setup static IP addresses for both computers. The Internet Sharing feature will probably change the scheme you used on the computer with the modem so it will lose connection with the other PC. I also seem to remember that the PC with the modem becomes a mini-dhcp server so it can hand out the new address scheme. The easiest thing to do at this point would be to reboot the 2nd PC and test connectivity and then modem sharing.

Hey thanks guys!

Randy, that was exactly it though I don't understand why. Switched setting on PC #1 to "never dial" and problem went away.

Thanks again.
