which air compressor to buy?

I'm looking for an air compressor for the garage - take lugnuts off, fill tires, etc.

what should i look for - how many gallons? HP?

any suggestions? I have no idea or where to start...

thanks!

If it's just lugnuts and tires and stuff, you could get away with a little pancake compressor. However, if you plan on running cutoff tools, air chisels etc. you'll need significantly more. I bought a 10 gallon hossfeld when I started restoring cars and outgrew it within months....

I usually suggest getting the biggest compressor you can afford. Air tools have a way of breeding, and their progeny tend to be larger and hungrier than their parents.

Completely agree.

The compressor I ended up with is an 12 HP, cast iron 2 stage with a maybe 25-20 gallon tank.

Just picked this up yesterday at Lowes. I bought a commercial compressor at a fleemarket 2 weeks ago....4 cylinder, 2 stage, 3-phase, horizontal tank monster. Sold it on Ebay and the profit payed for this puppy. Should be perfect for all my needs. Bigger is better, within reason

Used to be $40 cheaper though. Appears there is a mistake on the site....it's a three cylinder, not two.

Go right to a 60 gallon vertical...

I have a 135 psi 60 gallon Porter Cable 7hp. Does the trick nicely...needs 230v. About $450

Joel, It was $637 or actually $675 out-the-door with 6% NJ tax. They also carry a slightly lesser machine, yet perfectly capable, at $429. I would have probably been perfectly happy with this one.http://www.chironforce.com/itemdetail.asp?itemID=9004&catID=1561&parentID=100&item_typeID=10# I think Thom has this one.

I went for the higher cost unit because I used the profit from the one I flipped....kind of easier to spend easy made cash.
It also runs cooler and quiter which should accomodate media blasting nicely...and will hopefully be the last compressor I have to buy.

BTW, both units are listed on www.lowes.com.

Here's a 3-cylinder refurb I got from Harbor Freight back in 2000...had been repainted, but has run perfectly. Paid about $600 as I recall, and that included freight.

I agree with the others, with a nice compressor, you will not be limited in the air tools you choose to use.

Wow, great deal for $600!
You won't be waiting around for air with that puppy.

Bought this one at Costco for $250.00 along with the 62 piece air tool kit for $89.00. Seems to work fine for him garage use. I am gutting my roller to build a race car. Very usefull so far.

Not a hard core machine, but fine for my use...so far.
