The state we're in: Police lose weapons and car in hijacking...
I'm tempted to think this can only happen in South Africa, but being the eternal optimist, I would like to know if anyone knows of a similar incident anywhere else in the world. We sure have some brazen criminals around. Maybe the hijackers did not know their victims were policemen, they were plainclothes detectives in an unmarked car (presumably). Most (but not all) of these car hijackers are illigal immigrants from Mozambique, Zimbabwe or Nigeria, at least the ones who get caught.

If that happened in the states the thieves would crash the police car, shoot themselves with the weapon and sue the city because of it.

LeRoux, my cousin is a sheriff's deputy and has a drug dog. He leaves his patrol car running for the entire shift (to provide heat and A/C for the dog), even when he goes in for lunch. Criminals know stealing a police hot rod would result in the harshest beating when caught. When the punishment is harsh, the motivation is removed.

Le Roux - It still doesn't beat the case of the ATM stolen from John Vorster Square police station in Johannesburg a number of years ago! ( from the first floor no less!!!)
Aaah, how boring must life in the first world be....
