digital cable vs. dish network vs. direct tv and DVR's......

ok i've decided now that i have a house that my options opened up as far as a cable provider goes.
right now i have time-warner digital cable with a DVR and a cable modem for internet, the internet is stupid fast so my thought is to keep the cable modem and go with a satalite dish for television.
not worried about high-def, but am running s-video to my 32inch sharp tube tv.
i AM concerned about the digital audio with the movie channels as i have a nice surround setup.

channels i need to have.......
speed
discovery wings/science/etc.
history channel
tlc
fuel (extreme sports stuff)
and so on........

who uses what and what are your likes/dislikes?
how reliable is your DVR?
how easy is it to navigate?
how far in advance can you program your DVR? (i can go 1 week right now)

thanks, lets hear those thoughts

We have Dish Network at home, downstairs DVR included in the box and upstairs 2nd unit without DVR for my room (separate receiver). It works flawlessly. Cost $72.00 a month for both receivers. I used to have DirectTV before DVR, liked the volume of channels but hated the quality so switched back to Dish. I think the recordability is 1 week, to be honest I haven't used it except for a few Porsche things on Speed. I have DVR hooked into the computer (ATI vid card) so I record any shows I really watch or have time for and save for later.

Well lets see, I have a 10 foot dish with a Motorola digital reciever, HD add-on box and a MPEG-2 add-on box. I run it all through a home theature PC to a 65 inch Mitsubishi HD tv. I have feeds coming off for the upstairs bedroom and one to the garage for watching Speed or home made DVDs or CDs of my races if nothing good is on. The MPG-2 box is neat as you can get lots of foreign channels from europe, middle east and far east. Oh yea it also feeds my regular PC so I can watch tv while working on programs or school preps.

Directivo is awesome. You get a great picture and the ability to record two programs at the same time WHILE watching a previously recorded program. Do other PVRs have dual tuner recording?

John,

What European channels can you get with your dish. Sounds really interesting.

I can set you up with DIRECTV... I have three (3) DVRs and two (2) standard IRDs. We have everything you would ever want or need. Right now we can set you up with DVR plus three standard IRDs for $49 installed next day in most cases.

ReplayTV. I like my old version with the upgraded hard drive and the 30 second skip forward and 7 second back buttons. Some of the newer versions actually skip commercials although they may have eliminated that feature in the latest versions.

Right now mine still has two Porsche Supercup races on it.
