Hard not to read it for it was: an especially savage form of fundamentalist fascism. Given the violence of the murder -- Mr. Van Gogh was shot several times by his Muslim assassin, pleaded for his mercy as the killer calmly stood over him, was stabbed in the chest and then had his throat slit and his head nearly cut off -- it almost seems inhumane to say that this was also a "statement in opposition to free speech." Van Gogh was killed for the terrible crime of making a movie that illustrated the forms of Islamicist oppression of women. An artist is brutally murdered for making a film about the oppression of women and our most notorious defenders of free speech on the artistic Hollywood left have nothing to say? Or have I missed the outrage?
