Highway 52 Street Race Kills 2
Driver Strikes Truck, Both Vehicles Go Up In Flames

SAN DIEGO -- A fiery collision between a pickup truck and a small import sedan left two people dead on a stretch of freeway Thursday, 10News reported.

The crash occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m. as the drivers of a truck and a Mini Cooper sped at 90-100 mph on eastbound state Route 52, possibly racing each other, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Just west of Interstate 805, the Cooper driver suddenly veered across a dirt median area and into a westbound lane, where a Ford F-250 pickup plowed into it broadside, the CHP reported.

Both vehicles caught fire, killing the two occupants of the Cooper, a dispatcher said. The second motorist managed to get out of the burning truck safely.

Meanwhile, the driver who had been keeping pace with the sedan left the area, officials said. Witnesses provided investigators with the truck's license number.

Though apparently not to blame for the crash, the driver of the F-250 smelled of alcohol, failed a field sobriety test and was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, a CHP officer told.

The accident snarled traffic in the busy area through the early evening.

Kind of like the daydreaming moron who made an illegal left turn across two lanes of traffic in which a street race was taking place. Clearly her fault, but since a couple of kids were racing, they get 100% of the blame. It was all over the riceboy forums a year or so ago.

Street racing is bad, illegal, immoral, etc., but if someone else contributes to an accident, they shouldn't be absolved of guilt just because the other guy was driving too fast.

Sometimes, there are truly innocent victims, but in many traffic accidents there are degrees of fault on all sides. All drivers should still have an obligation to drive defensively and avoid an accident if they can.

This similar incident happened a few months ago but near Los Angeles, as my cousin in law reported:
Two cars were racing down the highway, one appeared to be a Porsche 911, and the other, a BMW. While driving next to the median, the 911 spun out and hit the median, probably killing the driver. The BMW kept going and escaped from the accident site.

My cousin in law, Maczek, said that while driving his Accord, when the 911 hit the median, parts flew out all over the highway, dismantling the car completely.

A similair story as to the one above. Just thought I'd share.
It is terribly stupid how some people participate endangering their lives, and the lives of others in these races .

Just a question....
If drinking and driving is responsible for all of the accidents that the anti-alcohol people say, why aren't there more at 11:00 or 12:00 at night as opposed to 6:00 - 8:00 in the morning?

your being a bit logical when asking the MADD big question. The unspoken words are that if alcohol is in anyone, even as a bystander in the back seat, it gets charged under the "alcohol" official state stats. 2 straights get in a crash. 1 straight is driving his drunk 16yr old home who's in the back seat. 1 straight is driving 0 alc... ie: "Another alcohol related death happened last night official records report."

"11:00 or 12:00 at night" is a good time for a 911 cruises 'cause it's shift change time. HP still allowing much quick commuter speed slack 'cause the herd are better, more efficent, more responsible drivers, in general. Also many young off duty cops, EMS, and firemen are either driving like cab drivers or like a big bull riders thru a China Shop. They make great radar "bait" and point men for road hazzards.. actually at a car show a few years ago I stopped at the State HP booth to check out their scene. They told me the greatest statistical amt of drivers with at least a little booze breath is after 4pm till after rush hour.

true story.... Hey motorcycle cop out there. What did daddy get his cycle stolen by his kid? License and regie please? Do you know what your speed was driver? Yeah I was trying to get us home from the burn center as soon as possible. We only toasted 2 guys last night and we have to report back in 4hrs. You guys are a consistant pia. Get outta here.

Yeah, that was kinda my point. Not defending anyone, but just seems a little out of whack.
