Liberal Media?
I'm going to ask a very ignorant question so go gently. What do you mean by the liberal media? Is the media, by definition, liberal? Do they report things from a liberal bent? What would a conservative bent be?
I'm more left leaning than right which may count for why I don't get what is meant by the media being liberal. Can someone explain? Do they only show stories from a liberal view point? Michael

We'll discuss this more after Dan Rather delivers his concession speech.

Jump on republicans/conservatives when they say something that is not politically correct, but give liberals/democrats a pass for doing the same thing.
Example: Crucificying Trent Lott for his praises of that old senator, Strom Thurmon, who recently died who used to be a segregationist. But ignore Gore's campaign manager, Donna Brazil, when she spoke about "beating the white boys" The press reporting on Republican "Political Operative" versus Democratic "Campaign Advisors"

Liberal media, might mean printed press.
Right wing media, might mean radio talk shows. TV is broken into broadcast and cable, each having a split of the market. A funny book on this topic is Al Franken's Lying Liars, a more serious book would be "What Liberal Media? by ..............forgot the dudes name. ![]()

Another example...
Most reporters (regardless of medium) seem to refer to President Clinton...but the current president is usually Mr. Bush.

LEGION: I just checked CNN and MSN and both referred to President Bush as President Bush. I'm not disagreeing with you, but didn't see it in a quick check of two sites.
KACH22I: I would have though that newspapers would take the lead of the people they serve. Therefore, a liberal city would take a liberal opinion and conservative, conservative. I have not read Al Franken's book and should probably put it on my list. Hugh R: A Senator's comments are more important than a campaign advisor's. But, media in general does jump on a comment and blow it out of proportion on many instances, and on both sides. It's just that I hear the right scream about the liberal media, I truly want to understand what they mean by that. I guess I'm asking for more examples. I hate generalizations based not on fact, but on one's skewed opinion. I've often heard that people feel that NPR is liberal. Why is that? I don't listen to it as much as I used to but can some one cite specific examples.

When I stopped watching CNN two years ago, they almost always said "Mr. Bush". I will concede that that may be different now. I also listen to WBBM (AM 710) out of Chicago, they still almost always say "Mr. Bush".
As for NPR... When I do listen to them (usually only on long road trips through areas with only country stations) they seem to be socially liberal. One of their favorite news subjects is whenever a conservative politician either calls to the end of, actually ends, or tries to limit or put conditions around some entitlement program (welfare, public housing, etc.). They (seem to me to) use a formula where they quote some worst-case-scenario number of people who will be affected the change, then interview someone who will suffer. They have yet to interview me (or anyone for that matter) who will suffer when their property or income taxes go up to pay for new programs. That's my 2¢. Like all of us, I'm sure my perspective is skewed by my upbringing and personal experiences.

Yeah. NPR. Those left-wingers recently did a story on author and suicide victim, Iris Chang who had the gall to write a book about Japanese atrocities in China before WWII.
Seriously, one could learn many things about our world listening to NPR as well as from right-leaning stations. If you just listen to those you agree with, then you're not necessarily hearing everything. Sherwood |
