Dan Rather to Retire

Didn't see this coming.

In other surprising news....the pope is catholic.

cegerer 11-23-2004 10:07 AM

That's a shame. :D

azasadny 11-23-2004 11:10 AM

Big surprise!!

YAAAAAhhhhhhayyyyy....couldn't happen to a nicer guy....and don't let the door hit you on the a$$ on the way out Danny Boy.....

cool_chick 11-23-2004 02:07 PM

Now if we can only get Rush Limbaugh to retire........

tabs 11-23-2004 02:18 PM

Cool one a life time ago now the LA Times published a letter of mine lambasting ole Rushie.....Basically I said he has 30 seconds of something poignant to say and 291/2 minutes of advertisments and BS....

cegerer 11-23-2004 02:38 PM

Dan Rather is (was? :D ) a flaming liberal who portrays himself as an unbiased journalist. Rush Limbaugh is a flaming conservative who portrays himself as a flaming conservative. There's a difference there. Something to do with disclosure, I think.

I believe ALL media should be required to wear big lapel badges indicating their political affiliation. It would make deciphering the spin so much easier .....

He's not retiring. He's moving to 60 Minutes as a contributor of "special investigative reports." There he will join the ranks of such other beloved CBS lions of journalistic truth-seeking as Morley Safer, Ed Bradley and Leslie Stahl. Clearly his brave defense of spurious stories has done the network proud. Besides, the shock of sudden withdrawal from his affectionately slurred diction, engagingly inane platitudes and endearingly inaccurate standards would obviously too much for us to bear.

Another HUGE difference, cegerer is that Rush's goal is to incite and rile up people. Every single day, day in and day out.

Yet another difference is that Rush is an entertainer, not a journalist. Yet people are hanging on his every word, all the while he riles up people every day.

I think Rush is an angry man who is providing little if any benefit to society.

Dan Rather is an icon in his industry.

cegerer 11-23-2004 03:53 PM

The only people Rush "riles up" are the Liberals. Everyone else sees him for the entertainer/commentator he is.

djmcmath 11-23-2004 04:11 PM

CC, the same could be said of Rather; the only difference being that Rather pretends to be a journalist. Of course, Rush's wildly fanatic right-wingism has alienated a lot of people. He doesn't really need to retire, as most normal people have retired him in their own minds already.

In fact, Rush is a demagogue. Something Rather hasn't the honesty to be. Instead he, Rather, conceals his bias behind a so-called "tradition" of probity and impartiality. He is wrong on both counts: the CBS tradition was never that great, and his contribution to it never more than counterfeit. The only thing icon-like about Dan Rather is how majestically he misrepresents himself -- the folksy populist with homes on the upper west side and the Hamptons. He is a living reminder of the whoredom that "success" in America can so often become, and a bad reporter to boot. Looking for inspiration or icons in this industry, look to people like Christopher Hitchens.

I've seen so many tallk and think like that man. For example, this attitude of "liberals" in America today....a lot of it isn't even true.

Let's get back on topic here! Everything you need to know about Dan Rather, all in one spot:

I love the Don Imus quotes:

<i>"........ And he's a great reporter, but he does not have all of his bait in the water. And he's a little tense. Watchin' Dan Rather do the news, he looks like he's making a hostage tape. [laughter] They should have guys in ski masks and AK47's just standing off to the side."
--Don Imus at the Radio Television Correspondents Association Annual Dinner, March 21, 1996."</i>

Much as Saddam and Arafat were in the terror industry. Not one of the three got what they deserved for the damage they did.

don't forget to include your monkey-brain president in that group as well, for he hasn't gotten what he deserves either for the damage that he's done to our country.

Many who live deserve death, and many who are dead deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be so quick to deal out judgement. Even the very wise cannot see all ends.

to whom were your comments directed to?

AFJuvat 11-23-2004 06:38 PM

Not at all sorry to see Dan leave. FOr the last few years at least he has been nothing but a ultra-left wing mouthpiece.

Then again, most of the networks have too much of a bias either way - I don't want political bias with my news - just tell me what happened in the world today.

Bring back the days of unbiased reporting - Walter Cronkite or Edward R Murrow.
