New shoes on the German Mistress...
So the other night I went to get shoes put on the ol' girl. This is the first time I've let a stranger lift my lovely lady. I brought a book to read, while they were working, but couldn't focus on it. I kept walking back over to the window to gaze upon her gorgeous lines, and to bite my nails over the college kids using high-powered machinery on my beautiful Fuchs. I was reassured when the tech not only looked up the torque spec for the lugs, but also checked the torque wrench in the calibrator-doodad. I felt better, at that point. They were really quite professional, and listened with great attentiveness to my paranoid jittering.
But then I had kind of an epiphane. These cars aren't just cars. I couldn't understand my strong reaction to seeing someone else working on my car, until I realized that I had made an emotional bond. I don't think about how much money it will cost, or what I could have bought with that cash. There is no longer anything like "perspective" -- she and I have developed a real bond. Scary. Then, when I got home, the pavement was damp, and I could see my recent tracks in the parking lot. I instinctively looked at my line, eyeballed the apex, and bent down to look closely at the tread pattern. I looked around the lot at some of the other tracks, and realized that I was probably the only one who had thought about the line. Then the deeper thought: these cars change who you are as a person. Owning a Porsche has a profound effect on the way that you think about cars, and perhaps on life in general. Or maybe I just need to get a girlfriend. ![]() Dan

I have to agree 100% as well. My car's in the shop for a major tuneup, first time since I've bought it I've left it with anyone and it's killing me not to be there even if I really do trust the mechanic

We understand you here, Dan.
Girlfriends are over-rated. They're not nearly as reliable as your car, nor are they as obedient. If you want softness, check the seats out. Warmth? How 'bout 210 degrees?! Sure, there is one body part that GF's have which I cannot seem to locate in Wayne's Online Catalogue.....but GF's don't always make that available either. You're better off with the car. They're also far less expensive no matter how much you spend on them.

Have you read about "heat cycling" your new tires?
It goes something like, drive them for twenty minutes to heat them up, then lift the car to let the tires cool evenly all around. If you don't lift the car at least park on grass and every five minutes pull up or back a quarter turn to avoid flat/hard spots. I did it, can't say it helped or hurt.

I really have to agree with you here. Girlfriends can cause nothing but problems and they aren't nearly as rewarding as a Porsche. While a Porsche can be equally as demanding, the ROI from a Porsche can be far greater. I would definitely choose a Porsche over any relationship with a girlfriend. And I'm pretty sure my wife would think that's best also. ![]() Randy

What's that song, Gilbert and Sullivan ... something about a dame? There's lots of things like a dame? Many things are quite like a dame? No, that's not it ... Oh, right, there's nothing like a dame!
![]() I've also noted a marked trend among Pelicans that women don't like Porsches, or men with Porsches, or that owning a Porsche makes meeting women more difficult. I would postulate that a man develops an emotional bond with his 911: women find that competition unpleasant, as they know they can't compete. ![]() Haven't heard about heat-cycling my tires, actually. I thought I just had to scuff them up real good doing normal use driving before I tried to push them to their limits. I'm actually bummed -- I was going to go for a nice long "warm up the tires" drive tomorrow, but some stuff with work has come up. Now the tires will have to spend most of the weekend making flat spots in the garage. ![]() Dan

you need to find a girlfriend who first asks, "can I drive your car?" And then after taking it into triple digits on the freeway, pulls over to switch back, then when back on the road says, "I really liked driving your car...now I know why you love it so much."

lol, I was actually hoping for a girlfriend who'd say things like "Hmm, feels like she's got power-on oversteer -- have you looked at the Smart Racing sways for this car?" Or maybe "She feels kind of loose at the front coming through turn 3 -- what would you think about buying a set of wider Fuchs?" (sigh) I never should have mentioned women. Women in the OT should be nameless objects of visual perfection, purely eye-candy.
Anyhow, my point was actually right in line with the Emotional Attachment Disorder thread from the 911 tech forum, but I hadn't read that thread before I started this one. My bad. Dan
