Proud of my Daughter!!

She read this article in the Nexus, the UC, Santa Barbara paper about a dad who pulled his daughter out of UCSB and blamed the school for the partying, drugs, etc. Here's the article Linky

And here's the article that she wrote the father and the school paper. BTW, she's 18.

"Ok, I understand your concern about your daughter and anything that happened to her while she was here. But none of what happens or goes on at UCSB is the university’s fault. The daily nexus enjoys the freedom to yes, print about alcohol and drugs and sex, but have you looked at the content of these articles? Most include safety and learning to drink in moderation.

Please, check any college newspaper and I am sure you will find considerable amounts of such content. I searched the newspaper databases of UC Irvine, UCLA and Berkley and found comparable amount of such articles related to drugs, sex and violence. So please, send your kids there, I’m sorry, but you just need to be protecting them forever if you think anything will change. Your daughter and students in general need to learn to control anything they do and do it in moderation. I am a current student and trust me I've been to my fair share of parties, but I know exactly when too much is too much, I know any resources which will help me through anything and I always make sure to let someone know where I am and what I am doing.

Any 18 year old leaving home enjoys the freedoms abundantly available, yet they eventually learn to control them, the motto of which freshman year of college is all about. In deciding on a campus to attend, I visited several catholic private institutions and stayed the night at three of them. Let me tell you, at these very strict institutions, I was offered to drink, smoke weed, go to numerous parties and even sneak out of an all-girl’s university’s dorms. At one such institution, I was told the University itself puts on welcome week parties where alcohol is served. No matter where you go, these resources are available to students; it’s just a matter of how public it is made. UCSB knows this and lets it be known to students all of the resources available to them in case of any such emergency.

Rather than trying to hide the truth to unsuspecting parents such as you, the university lets it be known everything which is happening, even though most of it is out of their scope in Isla Vista. This happens to be another story in itself, that so many people can be living in such close quarters and still be able to get along, how can you deny such a beautiful thing. Give me a break. In the daily nexus it mentioned that you “withdrew” your daughter from UCSB, maybe you should not look at the University as the problem, but at yourself. Let her live and make sure leaving was the choice she wanted as well as you. Hitherto, if you’re such a good parent, let us know why you let her attend a well known “party school” anyways, UCSB has been given this name since the late 60’s, so just give us a break, admit you were wrong in whatever way and get over yourself."

You should be proud. Many parents think today that they can shelter their kids away from this stuff. To be honest, many parents don't know the stuff that goes on and continues to go on so I think its wonderful that she has the power to stand up for her convictions. I graduated a few years ago and the university really helps to make things available to students should they ever need help. I would say buy her a drink but you may have to wait a few years on that. Good job on raising your daughter Hugh.

As a proud parent with one out on their own and another set to follow in a few years, it sounds like you did a great job with that one, Hugh.

Hugh, I'd be proud as well. Aside from the her realistic perspective and maturity the letter is well thought out and effectively written.
